Happy New Year to all! When I was little my brother and I would bang pots out the window on the stroke of 12 and when we got a little older would set off a firecracker or two - which I don't recommend now as there is zero tolerance for any sort of fireworks. Even sparklers are taboo.

Happy New Year to all. Hope it brings an abundance of fulfilled expectations. Hello there Brenda Gay Behringer. Hope I'm right about that middle name. Imagine, that. I'm sure there is a story behind it. Glad you liked the pictures, I enjoyed taking them. Oh, my goodness, imagine you being my first friend in the neighborhood at about 4 years old making mud pies in your yard and then being in St. Anthony's together for 8 years. I saw you put up some postings on the site about a year and half ago and then didn't see anymore. It was great to see you back on. I have a cute Easter Sunday picture of you, your sister Celeste, Eddie Duerholz and myself in our Easter outfits. Looking forward to your future stories, I know you have some, especially when your backyard was right next to the famed Mr. Abe Balaban. Have great memories of our childhood. Remember when there was no playground across the street from your house. Yes, I remember your bike and you used to ride me down to my house on the corner while I stood on the back. Also, we used to practice our annual play dance steps in your backyard. Take care, keep writing on the site. Ya never know who you may inspire to increase the circle of re-united friends. Oh, yes. Eddie Duerholz. I have no idea where he may be. The last I saw him was in front of Harmony music store in 1967 and when I saw his Dad in 1973 he told me he graduated from St. John's and was living in Manhattan. Take care Brenda, and to all have a HAPPY NEW YEAR !! Love, Peace and Happiness, Matty Keenan

Just got together with Maureen and Frank Rocco. Been a while since I had seen them. It was a great visit. They told me about this site and I am glad they did. What great memories. Names from the past for sure. Just wanted to say Happy, Healthy New Year to everyone.

Don Diehl,

You are so right about Ed Stack. I remember moving to the area when I was 11. Ed took me under his wing and made me feel right a home. He even introduced me to the Archer Rams (which I had the pleasure of playing for you). Ellie, I miss those handball games in 102 with your sister Jean. Say hello.

I have relived so many wonder memories from reading this site. Everytime I tried to write something I became so emotional I had to stop. I promised myself this year,I am going to write through my tears of joy for having found all of my wonder friends again. Let me start by wishin everyone a very Mery Christmas and a Happy New Year. Matty, how are you? Remember me? I am the girl that you must have eloped with a million times on the back of my rickety three wheeler bike. Do you ever hear from Ed Durholz ? I was just telling someone the other day how I always looked forward to going to the railroad cars to get our tree. My father would take my sister and myself on the evening excursion pick out the tree and then we would walk to my grandparents house on Commonwealth( now the site of the convent) and have tea and Christmas cookies. I look back and only have wonderful memories of the snow covered sidewalks and streets. We were able to drag the tree because there was so much snow. The Christmas plays were another thing. I can remember practicing so much that my throat would be sore. I saw the boxed candy in Walmart the other day that we used to get. I loved the rasberry ones the best. Some of those other flavors were dreadful. I hope to see everyone and keep in contact for the next year. Your pictures were outrageous Matty. Love,Much Health and Peace to all. Brenda

Eileen I remember the plays at Christmas most definitely.I remember the grades all having to practice and each one of us had different songs to sing.I would love to get a glimpse of my brothers singing.I loved all the Christmas carols and of course what you mentioned, santa and the candies. The eight grade was a memorable event for me.I guess when you got to the eight grade you had the biggest part in the play.We did the nativity scene.Sister Cathrine put all the girls names from both eight grades into something. She then picked out a name out popped mine.I had to be the angel that stood behind the baby Jesus that laid in the manger.Well I took it well. However, my classmates a bunch of characters, good ones of course started making me laugh. We were supposed to stand as still as possible because it was a nativity scene.NOWAY we could not compose ourselves. We started laughing. We did get in some trouble that one afternoon at practice actually a few of them. The things that were being said up there were just to funny.Anyway we were warned and the big day came we made it...I was angel for a day. Thanks for reminding me of that one^j^ ^j^ ^j^ ^j^I wonder if any of my school mates remember that one?We had some laughs in that class!!!And of course Christmas time was always the best time of the yr.in more ways then one.Hope your Christmas was filled with much surprise and great promise for a New Year.LOL Linda Hall

All this trivia talk about Christmas trees has left me burning, knawing with a trivia question that I just can't seen to get answered so I thought I'd pose it to the web site for solution. I don't think it will qualify as giving up anyone's deepest, darkest secret after 35-40 years and may even give more than a few laughs. SOme of us more sinful near-do-wells broke into the railroad boxcars ourselves and helped ourselves to some of the christmas trees to sell in order to put money away for future college funds and such. The railroad employed guards to patrol the yards in a deliberate attempt to prevent our future educations, and armed these ruffians with shotguns loaded with rocksalt rather than buckshot, and if the opportunity presented itself would shoot us in a deliberate attempt to prevent us from going to college! I have two questions. Which of us unfortunate souls took on a butt full of rocksalt one night, spending the rest of the miserable evening soaking in a tub of hot water trying to melt it out of his sore deriere? And what was the nickname we had for these "Pinkerton-type" guards" that road the rails patrolling in their "put-put" machines?

Merry Christmas & a very Healthy & Happy New Year to all

Does anyone remember when we had our plays at St. Anthony's for Christmas - not only did Santa visit at the end of all the plays, but we got a 3-D picture of the Nativity Scene and a box of hard candy with a little white string. I particularly like the peanut shaped candies. Just a another great memory.
Again I want to wish you all every happiness at this Christmas time. Cheers Eileen

Dear friends,
i am sending this message to explain the "TYPOS" made in the last message, by my dear friend Linda. let me explain that Linda has been sick with a combo flu/bronchitis thing. For those of you who know our "sweet linda", you understand that she had to send a cute message to share with her stratton park friends, during this holiday season. when doesn't linda have something nice to say on this site? it is not her fault that she spelt "CHRISTMAS" wrong a few times. Linda's heart is in the holiday spirit. but her head is so clogged up, she forgot to proofread her message, before she sent it. so linda my friend. thanks for the cute message, now we all hope you feel better soon. merry christmas dear friend.

Hello old & new friends,
I want to wish you all a very merry Christmas.also a happy & healthy new year. am looking foward to seeing some old friends that i haven't seen in what feels like 100 years. there have been some wonderful stories about christmas trees, on our website. i remember leaving ours on the fireescape, for some crazy reason.until mom was ready to decorate it.mom liked buying a full fresh tree. keep in mind that our firescape at 1512 was in the bedroom, that mom, my sister dina & i shared.not very big. we had a full bed, my little bed & 2 big dresser drawers. so the tree would go from the foyer, thru the liv room into our bedroom. i loved the smell of pine throughout the apt. i still get real trees every year.so to my old friend lydia. i will think of you, with your fake tree & enjoy the scent of pine. but i hope you think about those of us who will be sweeping up pine needles until march 2007. once again i wish all of you lots of love during this holiday season. stay safe dear friends....marie-elena

Wishing all my old (and some new)friends a very Merry Christmas. I see all these wonderful stories about Christmas trees. One of my fondest childhood memories of my father was our yearly treck over to the train tracks on Tremont Ave to buy our tree (always in the snow, it seems.) And carrying the tree back to Leland Ave, my little sister Lori riding the tree and then maneuvering it up four flights of stairs. And Lord did that tree smell great. Can anybody out there explain to me why Christmas trees don't smell anymore? This is my first Chirstmas with an artificial tree. I've been fighting my husband for 26 years about getting an artificial tree. But I finally caved in because they don't smell anymore! Anybody know why? Is it global warming or what?

Thanks to all the Stratton Park contributors that make this site so great. Matt Keenan you did an outstanding job by taking pictures of the old neighborhood. What a pleasure it is to “come home again,ö A few clicks on the “Stratton Park Todayö section and we are there. Matt, you asked for a Stratton Park Christmas memory and one that I cherish is that of my brother, Eddie, and his friends selling Christmas trees (the year was 1959) in front of our house located on Beach Avenue and Guerlain Street. It was fun to watch neighbors stopping by to select the best of the trees to take home throughout the weeks before Christmas. But by Christmas Eve the pick of the lot was getting quite slim and latecomers were very desperate to have a tree in their living room by Christmas morning. My brother, Ed, and his teenage friends were turning into sharp little businessmen. Prices were being slashed as would be buyers were convinced that the trees that were left were not as bad as they looked. I remember an exchange of a lot of humor, laughing and joking as the trees were sooner or later bought by the not so sure but at the same time, relieved Christmas tree shopper

I hope you all enjoy a beautiful warm and cozy Christmas and have a happy new year.

I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year. I have been reading this website for the past year and thought it was time I added my two cents. Thank you to the webmaster for creating this site. It has rekindled many warm and happy memories of life on Archer St. My brother and I were members of St. Anthony's infamous "folk group" and this time of year always reminds me of those midnight masses where we all would sing no matter what condition we were in. It didnt get any better than that. Growing up in the Bronx taught me that Christmas was not about the gifts, but about being with those you love. Happy holidays to you all.

Hello to all,
I just want to say hey to those of you who remember me and hello to those who dont.First of all to my lifelong friend eddie acunzo, the snow storm you are thinking of wasin 1969.that wild! that was the only time in my life that i could walk in the middle of Tremont ave. in the middle of the day and not see one single car,bus or even a plow.(Ed, just check the pics on page 3} Secondly, when i read the post about Christmas stories, for some reason one that I hadnt remembered for years came right to mind. iwant to see if any of the other partys remember this. I was walking across Tremont ave.with Eddie A.It was about Christmas week.we were coming from our hut on the mountain over the tracks. As we came across the street, there on the corner of beach ,selling Christmas trees was Kenny Steininger and another of the old crowd whos face i cant pull up.There in front of them was a 50 gallon drum with a nice healthy fire going in it for warmth.Well eddie and I walked over to say whats up and warm up a little.well,I notice on this makeshift grill on top of the fire, there sat this cool looking knife! I remarked to kenny how cool it looked and he quickly replied,"do you want to see it."Never one to turn down a chance to hold a cool looking knife,I said "sure." Kenny piced it up with his'gloved'hand, turned it around so I could safely grab it by the handle.I latched on to the afformentioned knife and found out that it was anything but "cool" That handle burned my hand so bad i was jumping up and down, all the while screaming every obscenity in my young and exstensive vocabulary of vulgarities! All the time i hopped around looking for snow to stick my hand in,my "buddies" were peeing themselves!!!!!!!!!!!It is amazing that i had forgotten that for so long until I read the request for old tales. Theres no friends like old friends. I want to wish everyone and their families a merry CHRISTMAS and a happy new year! Vito

Hiding between parked cars at stop signs, waiting for a new driver to pull off so we could jump behind his car and let him tow us an unsuspecting ride off the back of his bumper sliding through the snow, slush and ice. I forget which year it was in the late sixties, but after a huge record snow storm that the snow plows cleared into a huge mound of ice and snow (and I'm talking huge) on the corner of Archer and Taylor, we kids turned it into a fantastic igloo beneath the mound before it froze to ice. Remember?

Making extra money by helping to unload Christmas trees for sale from the railroad box cars on Tremont. Making even more extra Christmas money by breaking into the same box cars and helping myself to some of those same Christmas trees. I'm not sure if it was that time, or some other unnamed transgression that took place on the tracks at another time, but one of our webmates (you know who you are you rascal)who will go unnamed (I believe Michael D) took a butt load of shotgun rocksalt from one of the railroad yard guards for his efforts and spent the better part of the rest of the night sitting in a hot tub for his efforts trying to melt the salt out, very painfully I might add. And last but not least, Midnight Mass. I loved all the ritual, pomp and ceremony that surrounded Midnight Mass. I loved all of my neighbors decked out in their Christmas finery, the priests and altar boys in their most colorful vestments, the slight thrill of danger that if anyone lit a match St. Anthony's might go up in a fire ball from all the "party breath" wafting in the air from pre-Mass parties, watching wives elbow their husbands so as not to embarass the family by falling asleep, and finally, most of all, the choir hymns, especially the solos...Adeste Fidelis, Silent Night, etc. Never failed to give me goose bumps, and I always showed up no matter what shape I was in, and meaning no disrespect to anyone. On that one night I was a choir boy, altar boy and proud graduate of St. Anthony's again trying to recapture some of the magic. One memorable night I nodded off during the surmon, fell forward crashing my forehead on the back of the pew in front of me, of course the entire Church had to turn to look (and laugh), and by the end of Mass I had a knot on the front of my dome the size of an egg. I must admit though, it did serve to both wake and sober me up! Funny thing is, when I got home I never ever had to explain this other head I was growing. The family just assumed I must have zigged when I should have zagged, which, on occasion, was known to happen! Anyway, I want to wish everyone all the best through the holidays and the new year. I realize that anyone who may have been paying any attention to my postings over the past two months can easily see that they reek of ambivalence because many, many of my friends died there, and for only some of them it was for trouble of their own making and could have been avoidable. But any way you cut it, my Stratton Park was no Mayberry, it could be a very violent, non-foregiving place in many ways, and I have a need to remember all of it, warts and all, meaning no disrespect to those to prefer to remember more Kodak moments. But it was also a wonderful very unique place, full of way more than its share of memorable characters, a wonderful sense of community and some very hilarious memories. As crazy and unpredictable as it was, make no mistake about it, I'm proud to call it my own.

HO - HO - HO, Merry Christmas to all, be healthy and safe, eat, drink, be merry and not naughty but nice. I see that the site has been a bit quiet lately but have also noticed some Christmas and New Year greetings being posted up. I think it would be nice if some, if not many, of us posted some interesting holiday stories about the neigborhood or even a family tid-bit or two. Why, we could have a Holiday Story Contest with the winner being chosen by our one and only non biased fair minded panel of judges. Ah, the winner is and gets? I'm sure we can come up with something. Anyway, there are so many memories of the holidays with Christmas tree shopping at the train yard, Santa's workshop and the Christmas trees at the oval, Mid-night Mass, shopping in all the stores in Parkchester and White's religous store, little boxes of candy given out every year at St. Anthony's, mid-night mass, being off from school, getting your first bicycle or even not getting what you thought you would get, then burning the trees, etc. etc. Even Christmas songs create flash backs of great memories. One of my great memories was in 1971, the first and only Christmas I wasn't home and hearing "I'll be Home for Christmas". It really made me appreciate all the wonderful things in life we ordinarilly take for granted. There is one cute story which is one of my mother's favorites. My younger brother Jim was about 5 years old and someone rang our dorbell and was standing at the bottom of the stairs in our little vestibule. My brother at the top of the stairs yelled down "Who is it" and the guy yelled back "it's the exterminator". Little Jim in a aggravated tone yelled back "Don't you know we don't have bugs at Christmastime". Oh, there are many stories I can share about my father's methodology of painstakingly picking out the perfect tree. At times I think he was sizing up the integrity of the salesman rather than the look of the tree, or my wonderful Aunt Roberta painting Christmas scenes on our windows, putting up the train board and having family and friends visiting with great meals and treats. I think it may boil down to traditions that were establisherd and over time have changed. But in a very unique way those traditions have transcended time and in very subtle ways are still present in the fabric of our lifes. There was a genuine lovliness of sharing and giving and I will always remember and hold dear those cherished and treasured stories of my Chritmas times in Stratton Park. So, let's share and spread some of our Holiday Cheer with some Holiday Stories of the old but not forgotten neighborhood. By the way did your Santa get to you place vie the firescape? Just curious. May everyone have a great Christams, New Year and holiday season with a stocking full of Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

This comment is for Pattie Buckley, the Buckley clan and anyone else from the sixties and that era, and falls under the category of "fact stranger than fiction". But first let me clear up some misconceptions about myself that keep surfacing. The many, many rumors of my past demise have been greatly exaggerated. Despite fact-based rumors to the contrary, and despite being on a first named basis with the grim reaper for quite a time, this timex watch is alive, healthy and ticks on, thank God! Since posting on this website I keep getting lots of offline E-mails from people who tell me I'm supposed to be dead in a variety of ways. I'm pretty sure I'm alive no matter how many rumors surface! I hope no one is greatly disappointed! Anyway, to Pattie. I think you remember me, we went to St Anthony's together and also hung out at the Cave for a time. I recently exchanged correspondence with John Patrick Shanley, the famous author from our neighborhood mentioned on this website many times. Among other stories he wrote the screenplay for Moonstruck, starring Cher and Nicholas Cage. There were several things about Nicholas Cage that struck memory chords with me that seemed more than coincidental. Actually there were several things about a few of his characters in a few of his stories that I seemed to recognize, so I decided to do the obvious thing and ask him. SOme aspects of Nicholas Cage (one handed, etc.) reminded me of Paulie Houston, your ex-boyfriend who lost his hand in a Cozmo's butcher shop accident when we were young, so I asked Shanley about this story and others. As it turns out, this character was drawn on Paulie as were other characters drawn from our childhood. You might have already realized that, but I find it quite amazing to find multiple parts of our childhoods immortalized. I'm somehow grateful to Shanley for that. I thought I'd pass that on in cas you didn't realize it...Hope you're well...Eddie

To Pat Dillon: I haven't been on this site is some time but recently started to catch up on all the wonderful info and questions and answers and came across your concerned message about my daughter Karen. I am happy to report that she returned home 10 days ago from Iraq safe and sound after a six month tour with the Air Force. She is back at her base in Dover, Delaware and trying to catch up with her children and their changes. I can't express what a miserable time those six months were for me so I can't imagine my son-in-law's horror. I wish to express to all my sincere thanks for all the prayers and good wishes.

After I posted the family specs the last time I received a phone call from Florida - one of my brother Bob's good friend, Jackie Sheridan. We must have talked for about an hour on the phone and really had a chance to catch up.

Hope all is well with everyone else - please have a wonderful Blessed Christmas.

I would like to concur to the posting of Donald Diehl. Eddie Stack is not only an Icon at the PS 102 Playground but to all of Stratton Park and beyond. I played with the RAMS from 1962 until I went in the Air Force in 1966 and again in 1971 when I returned home. I know like Donald said if it were not for Eddie many of us woould have gotten ourselves into some deep trouble which is 100% true. One thing I learned from Eddie's coaching is you have to know all positions to play yours. In the school yard at our daily practices you played the position that was needed. Offense played defense and vice versa. I coached youth football for over 10 years and I ran my practices much the same way and the kids had enjoyed doing it. Heck, I still remember a track meet Eddie took us to at Randel's Island,(before my turn on with the RAMS), there werehundreds of kids running around the track. I won a medal but I do not remmenber what race or place I finished. I do remember I had a great time.
I believe anyone who has had the privilage to be coached by Eddie has a very great fondness, love and respect for him. I most definately do!

Hello to All: Donald that was quite an eloquent statement about Eddie Stack. Yes, he deserves all our thanks. Another thought came to mind as I read your posting and it is about fairness. I really believe that our experiences with playing in the streets or in 102 we learned a key element of what it means to be fair. Afterall, isn't that why we had do-overs when we couldn't determine if someone was safe or out, whether a ball was fair or not. And, Eddie Stack was a great factor in developing that important part of our lives. I'm sure we also came to realize that at times we did things that, after the fact, we realized were not fair and sought forgiveness and felt the need to apologize. So, with great memories of experiences and people from the neighborhood I know they affect the present and future. May we all remember fairness and and have gratitude to Feast on the positive on this great holiday. Hope all have a great Thanksgiving and one of the things I'll be grateful for is having a year to get together with some great folks from the neighborhood and meeting some new one's, as well. Happy Thanksgiving. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matty Keenan

I had the good fortune of playing for Ed Stack on the Fair Enough Little League team as well as one year on the fabled Archer Rams. I used to pester Ed into letting me pitch. I had a horrible arm but wanted to experience it once. Ed surprised me one game, had me come in to pitch in relief where I promptly loaded the bases and then gave up a grand slam to Mike O'Grady.(In my defense, Mike was probably one of the most gifted athletes on Archer St).
I also had the pleasure(and sometimes good fortune)of playing for Donald Diehl as he coached the Rams for several years. Don was also instrumental in getting us into leagues throughout the city playing fast pitch softball, touch football and roller hockey. Unlike today when most coaching is done by Dad's, Donald was single and probably in his early twenties back then. Thanks Don for your interest and time in trying to mold my motley crew of friends.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

A while back, Jimmy Carolan mentioned how Ed Stack was a very meaningful person to him during his youth back in the 60's. Although it seemed like a passing thought, I know it was not. During the 60's when many of us grew up, most of the sports we played were at PS 102 where Ed Stack was an Icon. I think the only sports I played as a youth growing up, other than Little League were learned at PS 102 in some program that was run by Ed. Whether it was competitive softball, basketball or football, the program always seemed to be run by Ed. Playing sports became the difference for many of us teenagers who had choices to make between just hanging around or playing ball and staying involved with good people. For the most part, those involved in sports at any level kept themselves out of major trouble. Obviously, most of the credit belongs to our parents for a solid foundation to start from, but we should never minimize the impact of someone like Ed in our lives. Many of us who coach youth sports, learned those lessons we teach from Ed.
All of us who played any sport at any time, that was run by Ed Stack, please take one moment to log into this website and say one last THANK YOU for a job well done. It wold be a great tribute to a "one of a kind man". THANK YOU Ed for being there for us!

Hi Rob,
I will definetely pass along your message to Packy Trudden. I've been telling him about this site for months, but he & his wife are living in the pre-internet world. They have a computer. I know because my husband set it up for them, but only their 16-year-old daughter uses it. Packy & Marla will be spending Thanksgiving at my house, so maybe I will be able to sit him down, show him this site & maybe drag his stubborn ass into this century.

I met my old friend, marie-elena ferracano in front of my old building(1574 Beach) a few weeks back. She looked great and what a pleasure it was to see her again after all of these years.

The neighborhood however looks like a war zone. The lots across the street that we used to play at we now home to run down looking housing. We decided it best to go somewhere else for coffee. Driving past 102 park it seemed like a lifetime ago that I spent every waking hour playing baseball, basketball or even just hanging out on the benches. Everything looked run down and depressing. Bar on windows were everywhere and it just could rip your heart out seeing what had happened to the old neighborhood.

The one bright spot was seeing the smile on marie-elena’s face and the fun we had reminiscing even though it was for only an hour over coffee and tea.

Thanks for meeting me over there, M.E and for brightening an otherwise dreary day. Let's not lose touch again..

Todd

Around the corner I have a friend,

In this great city that has no end,

Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,

And before I know it, a year is gone.

And I never see my old friends face,

For life is a swift and terrible race,

He knows I like him just as well,

As in the days when I rang his bell.

And he rang mine but we were younger then,

And now we are busy, tired men.

Tired of playing a foolish game,

Tired of trying to make a name.

"Tomorrow" I say! "I will call on Jim .

Just to show that I'm thinking of him.

But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,

and distance between us grows and grows.

Around the corner, yet miles away,

"Here's a telegram sir,"

"Jim died today."

And that's what we get and deserve in the end.

Around the corner, a vanished friend.

Remember to always say what you mean.
If you love someone, tell them.
Don't be afraid to express yourself.
Reach out and tell someone what they mean to you.
Because when you decide that it is the right time it might be too late.
Seize the day. Never have regrets.
And most importantly, stay close to your friends and family,
for they have helped make you the person that you are today.

hello old & new friends,
i see some familira names & nice thoughts about veterans day. i also want to thank a whole bunch of people from the neighborhood for standing up for our country. i can still remember my sister crying for someone she knew who was killed in vietnam. or how my mom watched the news faithfully every nite when my brother vince (also known as junior) served in vietnam. he did 2 tour of dutys.
i do have a favor to ask. may have to email mail my dear friend and former neighbor for the name of someone we knew. or maybe someone from the site will know who i am talking about. susan sica and i lived upper beach ave.private houses side. there was a guy who 's backyard was between sue's and mine.which means his brown shingled house was on st lawrence, somewhere in the 1540's block. i believe his name was dave. he joined the navy. he was a little older. at the time he wanted to get as many penpals as possible. i remember he sent me a letter after bootcamp. i believe i wrote him back once or twice. but then i fell in love and stopped our correspondence. since it is veteran's day, i just wanted to tell him thank you too. stay safe old & new friends.

Hello to All: Hope all is well. I see we have some "Monkey Busiess" in the neighborhood to take care of. I did something today for which I never did before. I went to the Veteran's day parade and it brought back two distinct memories of our neighborhood. Sort of bittersweet. We all have memories the most profound, the good as well as the bad, can probably be classified in the top ten. Todays exsperience brought up mixed emotions which, for me, are both in the top ten. In September 1971 I was sitting in my kitchen at 1555 Leland eating a steak and egg breakfast. It sort of felt like it was my last good meal before facing execution. In a few hours I would be leaving on a flight to Seattle Washington to then fly to Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam. I didn't want to go and had even thought of going to Canada in the summer of 1970 but inately knew I would never able to become who I would be if I did. My Mom and Dad drove me to LaGuardia airport and I can distincly remember my younger brother Jim standing at the window waving good-bye. I recall absorbing the neighborhood as we rode away, not knowing if I'd ever see it again. I know my eyes were swelling and my throat was choking. Quite frankly, I was scared. It wasn't an easy day. But low and behold on May 10, 1972 I had one of the most glorious days of my life. I also knew that a lot of candles were lit for ten months burning for my safe return. Again, my Mom and Dad this time picked me up and I vividly recall how great it was to turn off the Cross Bronx Expressway and cross over White Plains Road and drive up Leland Avenue passing Archer Street. The leaves on the tree lined street were fresh and green. I was home. Home Sweet Home. Not exactly the same, but no regrets. I was never in battle and suffered no causualties but was stationed across the street from the morgue and hammered out the caualty reports. So, Stratton Park in the Spring of 72 never looked so good. Going to the Veteran's day parade was poingant to say the least. Seeing guys and gals in uniform, some disabled and knowing some had died in service made me feel so grateful of those two memories of leaving home and coming home giving me a special appreciation of life and being able to still have great friendships with wonderful folks from that home I had left and returned to. I am certainly glad I never went to Canada. God Bless all those who served along with their families. Have a great weekend, See ya at the Mud Bowl in exactly 3 months from today. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

Hello to all you SP folks. How have you all been? "THERE BACK" remember that famous line from what movie?Anyway I,m back how do you like that and I am getting a bit confused as to how many monkey,s there were in the neighborhood. Can anyone tell me.We have the one on Mansion St.that MARIE ELENA said belonged to her grandmother.I remember seeing this little guy every morning and afternoon coming to and from St.Anthony,s.Marie maybe you can clear that one up for me and also you said what kind it was.I think a ring tail not sure.Anyway to my recolection there were a few monkey,s living in that same house.BOBBY ARCHER had one too.We have FREDDIE BRUCALE who has mentioned a monkey where did that one live. Our one and only CLAIRE THE PRETTY has claimed there was one on GUION if I,M not mistaken.CLAIRE apologies if I made a mistake.I now read DOC,"hi to you too dear and glad you were able to fix your computer".He states his sister owned a black wooley.I don,t want to be silly, yes I do,is this a type of monkey or just a cute way of describing one.O well just thought I could get some one to help me out here.I wonder what one is the best to get.I was thinking of getting one too, just joking.Anyway I hope I did not leave anyone out,if I did forgive me.How many of these little guy,s lived in STRATTON PARK and I wonder what there names were.O well this is what happens when your up at the crack of dawn on a SAT.morn.thinking about monkey,s.By now and have a great HOLIDAY!!!

I love you all. I will be e-mailing you soon. Great pics! I remember the day. Maybe Mike Sweeney has some more? He became a legend in his own time with two girls! HE KNOWS what I'm talking about (-: Oh by the way... The monkey was my sister's. The monkey's name was Gina, she was a black wooley. Talk to you soon.

sorry, but i ended my previous message, before i did any proofreading. if you walked up the corner from beach ave, the same side as the small store. in the middle of the block. the house were all attached.the houses had very high steps.so the 1st floor windows were appeared higher up.thats why it was so easy to see the monkey. the houses were opposite from the garages. this was either on your way to or from st anthony's.i lived around the corner, up beach ave. i still can recall climbing the big-deep steps to visit my godmother. hope i was of help. marie

To Freddy Celli,

I am sending this to give you some insight about this monkey business. my godmother elaine had a monkey sometime between the late 50's till early 60's.until it got out of control. she lived in her parents house the "ulysse family", on mansion st. their younger daughter annnmarie, taught music at st anthony's for a short time. attached to them on the left side were the "kirschner's", they got a ringtail monkey and it would hand by the window. so i am assuming that you are talking about the ringtail monkey, because you are too young to have seen my godmother's monkey "coco". i hope i have been of some help. take care, marie

Leslie Sherwood and John Tell posted some well deserved comments about Eddie Stack recently. I just wanted to add my two cents worth regarding Eddie.

Other than my father, I think I respected Eddie more than anybody growing up in the neighborhood. As John mentioned, we always watched "the big guys" play football whether in the park or at Ram games on Sunday. Eddie and the Rams were synamous to guys like John Tell, Kevin Bourke and myself. Eddie's impact on me however; was not only football related.

When St. Anthony's dropped basketball in 1965 there was nowhere to play organized games in the neighborhood. Like most kids I played baseball and football but basketball seemed to come pretty easy to me. Now I was devastated that I couldn't play in 8th grade. Well along comes Eddie to start a CYO team and enter us in tournaments,I believe, he paid for himself. Next we are representing the neighborhood in the NYC Parks Department Championships against the Nobles coached by Abe.

If Eddie had not "stepped up" for us, kids like myself and Richie Burke might not have had the opportunities we had later on in High School and College. Today, it seems, we hear only about abuse, negligence and worse when it comes to children. Eddie Stack, one of the good guys, thanks for being there for us.

Hey Marc,

Remember the time we handcuffed Tushie to the big swings by the handball courts. It was about 9:00 at night and we swung him while he was handcuffed and left him there. We came back about 11:00 and there was Tommy Tush, still swingin'.................he was a bit pissed though.....

Here is a great Balaban story! He was doing work in the Rocco's house on Guerlain St. Frank Rocco Sr stepped out to run some errands, and when he came home Balaban was in the tub taking a bath! He said the water in the tub was black! You had to love Balaban, he was a neighborhood legend! When he walked out of his house time stopped! Whether you walked by his house, or when you saw him in the street, you were petrified! In our neighborhood, Friday the 13th was everyday! God bless Balaban! lol

Hey guys! I just wanted to share some news about a very talented film maker from the neighborhood! His name is Billy Lappe. If you go to myspace.com and look up Verinoble you can get information about his most recent film. It will be showing on the 14th of Nov. at the New York Film Festival. It would be really incredible to catch up with friends and family from the "old neighborhood."
Take care!

PS: PLAYDROME RULES STRATTON PARK LITTLE LEAGUE! I was in the majors when I was 10 years old! We won the championship 2 out of 3 years while I was there! My teamates were some famous people from the neighborhood! Kevin O' Gorman, Pete & Billy Zeccola, Sammy Seda and Joey Anastasia. When I find the pics I will add more names!

Hi Lydia: Great to see you on the board again. You are right about Pete. My father knew him as they worked together in the same post office. He really was a great person and did all you mentioned. He was a working machine. Most people would have given up, but not Pete, in short even though as kids we teased him, I had the upmost respect for that guy. I have not heard that about Howie, however I knew he was sickly all through the years. Take care and hope to see you at one of these reunions.

Just wanted to pay my respects to "Punchy Pete." He was actually one of my best friends's father. He passed away a few years ago. Although he was a little strange (he was a boxer in The Navy) he was actually a really great guy, and a wonderful father & husband. He worked 2 full time jobs as long as I knew him. He worked for the post office & as a custodian at Monroe HS at night, plus he did all the family's grocery shopping because his wife couldn't walk (she had diabetes). He was also a huge Sarah Vaughn fan & had all her albums & played them constantly. He had a very impressive Jazz collection, if I remember correctly. I can remember him schlepping all the way to Pathmark on Bruckner Blvd with a shopping wagon. Lord knows it couldn't have been easy for him. His daughter Elyse still lives in that same apartment on Theriot Ave., but that's another story. I heard a rumor recently that his son Howard passed away recently. Does anyone remember Howard Sinuk? He was about 6'7" & was always dragging around a basketball.

Marion-Of course, I remember you and your family. Pat says,

Yes, Linda and I did like to dance and experiment with makeup. Black eyeliner and blue eyeshadow for a dramatic effect (maybe a little too dramatic at times). After sitting in those desks all day wearing those dull brown uniforms a change was definitely needed after school. Time to take off the brown oxfords and dance to 45's, 78's or whatever Cousin Brucie was playing on the radio.
Linda- I do remember Neil Knox. As I remember he had an acerbic wit. One of his talents was coining names for everyone.

I have a great Balaban story. He must've taken away a dozen or so stick ball bats and Spaldeens after chasing me, Pat Pontillo(who lived 2 doors away from him) and a bunch of my other friends like Frankie Rocco, Steven Michielli, Henry and Mikey Grammazio, Mark Seda and Tushie. He would chase us and we'd drop all or stuff and run as he scared the shit out of us.

One day I went to my grandma/grandpa's apt(1564 Taylor Ave). I must've been 11 or 12 years old. I walked into her apt and no one was home although the front door was unlocked(which was common back then). I went to the bathroom as nature called. The bathroom door was partial opened so I assumed no one was in there. When I walked in I saw a naked Balaban taking a bath in their bathtub. He looked at me and even though I'm sure he didn't recognize me, I recognized him. I ran out screaming and scared shitless.

Apparently, as I later found out from other friends he was an electrician and did jobs in alot of the neighborhood apts. After he finished a job in an apartment he would often take a bath in that apartment to clean off.

All I know is from there on I always made sure someone was home at my grandparents before I would ever walk in again.

Between Balban, Morty & Punchy Pete(anyone remember him?)we had some very interesting experiences.

It interesting to see pictures of old neighbor.
It would be interesting to see pictures of the Archer Street
Ram football team. In the 60's the Rams had a great sandlot team and many of us enjoyed their games. As you know Ed Stack was intrumental in starting the team and was the coach for the time I followed them. The neighborhood was lucky to have Ed as coach and his teams were a source of pride.

On another matter, we had a lot of "unique" individuals in the neighborhood. It may be interesting to many to hear stories of some of these people. Is this something that people would enjoy? Almost all of had many iteresting experiences with some of and I feel many would like to relate to others.
Two individuals (of many) that I thought was unique: Fr Scully and Ballabam (?). If intersted I have a few stories I could start with.
Regards,
Les

All you past altar boys remenber that one of us had to leave the altar prior to the end of mass to light the charcoal in the "boat" so that the incense would be ready when needed to bless the casket. When the mass ended the priest would go back in the sacristy to add or change some vestments. Our job was to get the accalite candles and the incense.

Well my cousin Steven went in and lit the charcoal however; he draped the chain of the "boat" around the charcoal as it began to heat up. Now we come back in to the sacristy to get ready and by this time the chain is pretty hot. Steven quickly pull the loop of the chain so that the hot part is laying on the table. Joey Galvin comes over picks up the chain and lets out a scream, expletive deleted, and throws the charcoal and burning incense all over the sacristy. Father Reilly goes crazy and starts beating Joey on the head with the prayer book. Steven and I are hysterical. Unfortunately as I look back at solemnity of the ocassion, I'm sure the friends and family in the church did not think it amusing.

A little Halloween nostalgia from a couple of different parties: On two different occasions Toni Ferracano (Marie Elena’s mom) helped with my costumes; a Betty Boop costume for one party and she made the apron for the french maid for another party. I think the party I was answering Linda's question for (earlier on the site regarding the flasher costume), was when I was the french maid. Theresa Tirelli was dressed like a hippie chick. I think it was the same party that Jimmy Vandervoort was trying to get an "Elvis" costume, but wound up with a circus ringleader costume. Elvis was already rented. It was dark fushia (satin) with tails. He didn't wear the hat, but threw on a pair of sun glasses. He tried! It reminded me of the year Kenny and I threw one of the Halloween parties in his basement. Janie Anastasio and Jimmy didn't know what to be.Janie came as Groucho and Jimmy wore suit pants, hid one arm in his shirt and threw a mop on his head with a hat, walked with a cane and wore a cape. Till this day, I can't figure out what he was supposed to be. That year Joey Bello was an indian, Jeanie Hallahan was a mouse, Gerri was a wizard, Louie Fermonte was Dracula, Jimmy Scanlon was a mechanic, PJ O'Sullivan was Alice Cooper, Kenny S. was Superman (I had bought him tights somewhere in Manhattan in a specialty store - I mean finding tights for someone 6'1" isn't easy to do), Sam Simpson and Una Kelly were Bonnie & Clyde, Ray Ubelaca and Jimmy Benkovic wore their usual army jackets, Eileen (Steininger)Cutaia was a gypsy, Bobby Cutaia was a woman (what a site), Frankie Auer may have been Moses.
I know he wore a white sheet and put powder in his hair, beard and eyebrows. One of the McElroys was Uncle Sam and I was Scarlet O'Hara. The hoop under my dress was so big, I couldn't fit through the doorways. It was a great party. We all had a blast. I should post a picture I have of Kenny in mid air jumping off his couch really trying to be Superman! It's almost as good as the party we had when he dressed like a hooker in Eileen's hot pants, a blonde wig and wore fake falsies and a see through top, but refused to shave his beard. He bought size 11 silver sandals at Korvettes (I remember I couldn't believe they had ladies sandals that big) and he managed to trip and fall on the basement stairs because the heel got caught. He was a trip. (Eileen...YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT ONE!) Well it’s been fun remembering those parties. They usually come to mind each Halloween. (Marie Elena reminds me every year) I still dress up since my daughter was born on Halloween – it’s tradition. How funny she was born on my favorite holiday. Talk to you soon Marie. P.S. Don't tell my daughter too much, or else I'll tell your sons more about the time you got stuck in the fence. hehehe :)Love ya!

Didn't Fr. Staubach have a plate in his head? I remember serving Mass for him and he's send me back into the sacristy to refill the wine crucible so he could drink some more. I'm a little ashamed to confess that I nipped the wine bottle myself sometimes, but before you think too harshly of me, by no means was I the only one. All of you altar boys out there, do you remember serving the Mass in Latin and facing the altar away from the parishoners before the many changes that came in the sixties converting the Mass to english, putting folk songs, etc. in it. I used to kind of like serving for weddings and sometimes funerals because occasionally you'd get a tip. I was fired as both a choir boy and altar boy, come to think of it, bounced from the drum and bugle corp. as well, but I don't remember why. Does anyone else remember the drum and bugle corp that met in the bottom of the Church, I played barritone horn. Come to think of it, I believe I joined most of the groups that the Church organized, Fr. Grogan was good for suckering you in, but always wound up being kicked out. I guess the spirit was willing, but the flesh was weak. Come on, I'm not the only one with a little bad boy in him, to feel the crack of the ruler across the knuckles, etc. am I? Come on let me hear a few of those rated PG stories too, I'm not the only one, they were fun too!! The more I get into this website, the more fun I'm having!

John Tell - How are you man? Sure I remember my pop bringing us to Welfare Island Probie school where he was an instructor for the FDNY. I just heard from Mike Durkin, Kenny Steininger, Doc Kerschner (the monkey in the window was his), Bobby Roth and Murphy Ohrnberger! It's like old home week, unbelievable. I remember we played on the Stratton Park little league together (I sucked) and playing as kids on the lots of Beach Ave. DO you remember dirtbomb fights on Beach, and bottle rocket fights on Archer? Do you remember Mike Sweeney having this dream of owning a muscle car, I think a GTO, saving his pennies and dimes then wrecking it on the Cross Bronx Expressway before his auto insurance kicked in. Busted himself up pretty bad too. Though we went in different directions, you towards Cotter's Bar and the Archer Rams, me towards a path for self destruction and oblivion, I still have fond memories (and not so fond ones) of our youth, and luckily I eventually turned out OK, though I took a rough path for a while after my parents died. I guess like the old saying says, what don't kill you will make you stronger. I think it was Danny Cunningham that had a boxing ring in his backyard, do you remember? What happened to him? I remember always playing till dark and being the last kid to go home, trying to convince the others to stay out. Several years ago I drove through the old neighborhood. It was pretty depressing, sure looked a lot smaller than I remembered it. I was on a business trip from New Orleans and had flown a few friends up from New Orleans to show them a good time in the Big Apple. We called the trip the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. I wanted to show them a little bit of each, some snippets from the old days. They were some beergarden buddies so we were drinking a few beers while touring. Had to go to the bathroom and had no where to go. I hope no one gets offended by what I'm about to say. I went into the alley of my old building on Taylor and relieved myself against a pile of trash down there. I told my friends in jest that I was re-marking my territory. That's exactly how it felt. Part of me wanted to stop people in the street, especially those looking at me like I had invaded their turf and didn't belong, and tell them, hey do you want me to tell you how that crack got put in those bricks, or what store lived in that space 40 years ago? This was and still is my neighborhood long before it was yours. I know every alley, basement and rooftop in the area and can tell you stories about each that would make your hair curl. It's hell to get old Johnny boy, but all and all I have few complaints. Nice to hear from you, hope I hear from others. - Eddie

Reading the latest story of how Matt Keenan obtained pictures for the site and the comments about how the neighborhood changed over the years I feel compelled to tell a quick story. I was coming back from LI from a business trip about 5 years ago - coming across the Throggs Neck bridge I decided to take a tour of the old stomping ground. As I drove off the cross Bronx - up Taylor to Tremont around the corner to beach up to commonwealth, and as I would stop once and a bit to look at the sites, I noticed a car following me....as I was just about to get back on the highway up the bronx river this car puts on the lights and sirens and proceeds to pull me over. As it turns out I had a tailout out, but the two detectives in the car also wanted to know what a white male in his thirties with CT license plates was doing driving around looking at buildings and staring at street signs. After I explained I had lived in the neighborhood some years back and one of the detectives actually went to Mt. St. Michael years before me, he explained that the neighborhood had really changed and that if I was going to do site seeing again to make sure that a)I have someone esle in the car with me and b) make sure I wasn't wearing a shirt and tie..oh yeah get my tail lite fixed!!!..so Matt I applaud your determination to gain access to certain areas of the neighborhood without any unfortunate incident!!! rgds, Rob Abbate

Hi there to you, Rusty Duffy,

If you check out page 6 of the photos, you will find yourself at The Oval with Pat Malzecher and some of the 72 others!! Do you recall having about 90 in our first grade class with Sr. Assumpta? The girls would sit and color their nails with red crayon waiting their to read.

I often wondered where you went, along with Billy Carroll, Pat M. Sue McGovern, Pat Reynolds, (the White Plains contingent). It appears as if you joined the other half of all the firefighters/policeofficers who moved to Pearl River at that time. When my family left the Bronx they were scattered throughout Rockland Co. in Pearl River, Congers, Nanuet, West Nyack. My Uncle Frank Spillane was a NYCFD batallion chief in the Bronx, who lived in Pearl River. I myself taught in Nanuet for 2 years at St. Anthony's. I have been living in Quincy MA for the past 34 years with my husband Bob, 3 daughters and 1 grandson. Looking forward to retirement next year....

Seventh and eight grade were lots of fun memories with the group of us, wouldn't you say? I recall Pat Malzacher having the first TV, a small small screen that we all gathered around to watch. Do you remember out parties with spin the bottle and post office, a far cry from today's parties. George Kelly, Leslie Sherwood, Alan Sole, Larry Mullahy and one or two others have been on the message board. Life sounds good for you, half at the Jersey Shore (some good summer memories for me there)and the other half in Florida. Would enjoy hearing from you..Pat Kenny Barry

My name is Eddie Acunzo. My parents, brother and I lived in the neighborhood and attended St. Anthony's School/Church. I think that the altar and altar furniture that my father Tom built for the Church still adorns that altar and bears a commemerative plaque with my father Tom's name. My father and brother were career FDNY. I was the black sheep of the family. You may remember me as a wild child of the sixties and early seventies, I went to school and hung out with many of you in my younger years, ratted the streets and was even arrested by some of this website participants for past transgressions in another lifetime. I was all too familiar with the 43rd precinct. If we could only rewrite history, sigh. Actually I don't think I'd change much because I learned many survival skills in the old neighborhood that served me well throughout life, and I miss the comradery of our youth, the strong ties to family and neighborhood, to our roots. Our kids don't know what they missed growing up in the suburbs. It's a great background to look back on if you're lucky enough to have survived it. Many of my friends did not. I got shot in the butt in that neighborhood, and my brother Tom was stabbed in the choir loft while singing during choir practice or Sunday Mass, I forget which. At times it was very rough, but I wouldn't trade my colorful background for the world. Fortunately for me I've righted my ship almost 30 years ago, rehabbed (with Henry Fernandez, do you all remember him?) and have been clean and living in New Orleans for the second half of my life. I think I'm on my tenth or eleventh life, I guess I'll keep at it until I get it right. I'm married, had one son who became a pharmicist (God's idea of irony) and is recently deceased, but is survived by my beautiful granddaughter Isabella. I just came back from visiting my brother Tom in Newburgh. He's very sick with diabetes and is on dialysis. I'll tell him of this website, maybe it will cheer him up. Worked many years as a psychiatric counselor trying to help others with what little I've learned about life, then spent a career working as a Quality Coordinator for Union Carbide Chemical Corp., now retired from there. Recently I met with some of my friends from the old neighborhood. John (Murphy) Ohrnberger, Chris Williams and others. It was a lot of fun to relive many many stories from growing up. Anyone who remembers me (fondly I hope) let's trade some stories. Until then...

Regarding the trivia question about the bar on Tremont- my vote goes to the "C'MON INN". Spent some time there playing shuffleboard with Ricky, Vinnie and Susan.
For those who were taught by Sr. Theresa, I have a trivia question.

It's funny that you brought up the graduation dance. When I first heard about the site and looked at the other graduation pictures I immediately thought about that dance and you as my date and what a good time we had. You were always a character.I can't believe it's been 41 years. I don't feel that old. Thanks for the memory. I'll be sending the picture out Monday. Hello Karen Curley,

I can still remember pinning a corsage on you as my date for the 1965 St. Anthony's Graduation Dance. After the dance you and I, Albie Corti, Louise Paradiso and Joey DePasquale went for chinese food at Hugh Grant Circle next to the Circle Movie Theatre.

I was looking for my 1965 graduation picture to post here however; haven't found it yet. You are correct about "Jack" that cherubic grin has never changed. He is still "angelic".

I have a quick story for you. About 15 years ago I returned from work to find my wife purchasing meat and seafood from a man who had been selling food in the area. He was at his truck when I entered the house so I did not see him until he came back in with our order. As some people know, I rarely forget a face or name so I was quite suprised to see that "our salesman" was your brother, Hoyt Tanner.

Anyway, good to hear from you Karen. Say hello to Tommy for me. Hope to see that 1965 Graduation picture soon.

Ok...so here's a longshot, but I thought I would give it a try. A few of us are going to Nashville for the Country Music Fanfair Festival, June 7-10th next year. If, by any chance, there are any other Strattonparkers out there who also plan to be there, it would be great to meet up. Just email me and we can discuss details. At this point, all we have done so far is ordered the tickets via ticketmaster...still have to make plane and hotel reservations. Cheers!

Dear Matt,
I took your suggestion and read your story about Balaban, quite interesting. I wonder whatever happened to him. As a teenager I switched hanging out between the neighborhood and Clason Point. I looked at your 8th grade graduation picture but I'm not sure if we ever met. You and my cousin Tom Diehl were in the same graduating class so possibly our paths crossed. Anyway thanks again for the story and the great pictures and all the work you've done to keep the memories alive. I have a St. Anthony's 1965 graduation picture. If you'd like to post it let me know how I can get it to you. John Cusack looks like such an angel in it but we all know how untrue that is. John Tell if you should happen to speak to your sister-in-law Noreen please ask her to give my regards to Patty Clark. How is Mike Fitz doing? For Marie-Elena - I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. She was a real nice lady. We lived in the same building as you. Your Mom made by dress for Eileen Steinenger's Sweet 16 Party as well as a bride of Frankenstein costume for a Halloween party. If memory serves me correctly there was a picture of your brother Patrick in an Army uniform that your Mom proudly displayed. I'm a little younger than your sister Dina. If anyone has had any contact with Kathy McGuire (Taylor Ave) please let me know.
Thanks

hey bobby,

do you remember when harmony record store gave free coupons with every 45 purchased? 10 coupons got you a free 45. they must have had the same guitars hanging in that store for 40 yrs.could never fit more than 6 customers in that place at one time. we would go bowling at the playdrome. 1 game lasted 3 hrs, pre-electronics & we all took extra turns. then ran to harmony's to get the latest 45. there was always some one washing a car or sweeping their sidewalk on guerlain, as we walked home. i never felt afraid. may have to take a drive by soon. my oldest brother patrick may be coming up from florida. we always have to go to the old neighborhood when he is here. stay safe old & new friends.

Hi Marie: Wow I didn't think anyone would remember the Carvel on White Plains and Guerlain St. on Halloween. How about free pizza at Carls or a free 45 record at Harmony Records on Unionport Road? I use to making a killing in the bars with the trick or treating. The bar accross from where Doc Adler's use to be was the place to get the money treats. I think it was Carey's. Halloween was the best, you could trick or treat late into the evening, people would leave there doors open and I remember in the private houses up from Jake's on St Lawrence Ave there would be alot of parties going on and anyone was welcome. We had it made on Halloween as today it is to overdone. My opinion we had more fun than the kids do today.

Matt, after reading your story, I truly believe there is hope for the human race! All those kind people you met just validate the fact that many if not most of us just want to be trusting and decent. As far as those ruffians are concerned who destroyed you camera and phone, well, I remember a handful of people when I was growing up who would have done that and worse - so I could get all judgmental about them, but the bottom line is, human nature really doesn't change - different faces but you'll always have your small group of malcontents amongst the rest of us. Great job - thanks for the hard work.

Hello to all: Hope all is well. Thanks again to all who have expressed appreciation for the pictures posted as "Stratton Park Today". A recent posting about an unfortunate violent incident in our neighborhood has inspired me to write about the picture taking experience.

I do not know what inspired me to take the neighborhood photo array other than reading so many postings and imagining the streets and buildings and sort of wishing that I could actually see them. Anyway, the project involved about four visits to the neigborhood each being about 5 to 6 hours in length. A fifth visit only took about one hour. During the course of taking approximately 750 pictures I had the pleasure of meeting many people in the neighborhood. Many times someone would come up and ask me what I was doing and we would discuss the neighborhood as I remembered it 40 to 50 years ago. I would just like to point out about 3 or 4 particular events which made the experience memorable.

One of my objectives was to get some good full views of Archer Street and the 102 playground. One view of Archer Street from Parkchester towards Beach Avenue was taken from the roof of the Parkchester garage. I originally thought that access to the garage would be the easiest and the others more difficult. However, I was declined permission to go to the garage roof several times but finally the stubborn garage attendant gave in when he realized I wasn't going to give in that easily. I had never been up there before and was amazed of the view and all that could be seen.

I then wanted to get a reverse picture from Archer Street looking towards Parkchester. The only way I could possibly get such a photo was to go up to St. Lawrence and knock on the door of the house directly in line with Archer Street. To my suprise the woman, a nice hispanic lady, listened to my story of growing up in the neighborhood and my request to take a picture out her back window. The lady actually invited me in and took me to the back of the house. However, taking the picture from there was obscured by a backyard tree. We figured out that if she opened the window I could climb out to the back porch roof. Voila, I had a great view and a great picture. It was an extremely hot day and after a minute or two of taking the pictures I was finished. Upon re-entering the bedroom this nice lady had an ice cold glass of water waiting for me. I was absolutely astonished at her willingness to help me out and to trust a perfect stranger with such a peculiar request.

I wanted so much to get up on one of the roof tops overlooking the playground but wasn't sure how to do that. The answer came as if God had invited me up there. While in the process of taking pictures of the alleyway between the buildings on Theriot and Taylor I met some people sitting on their beach chairs chatting outside the building. They saw I was taking pictures and asked me what I was doing. I explained my project and how I had grown up in the neighborhood and pointed to 1556 Theriot and told them I was born in that house and how I saw the playground being built when I was 5 years old. I pointed out the house at the top of the hill of Guerlain and Beach and they were amazed to know that John Shanley lived there. As the conversation unfolded I mentioned that I would like to get up on the roof and along came the super who said he would take me up to the roof. Now, that was a roof I was familiar with and again the view was just remarkable. The super was so friendly and while being so hot up there he was so gracious and kind. I now had the three views I really really wanted. I even got to go down on the ballfield and play a few pitches of stickball with two kids. Now, that was a real childhood flashback.

But, I wanted to get a picture of the alleyway behind the private homes on Taylor and the Co-ops. The only way to do that was to again knock on the door of one of those houses at the end of the block. This time I was greeted by a young woman but she was hearing and speech impaired. Well, since I have an aunt and uncle who are similarly impaired I had to resort to my poor rendition of signing and lipping. Before long the woman brought me into her backyard and helped me get a dirty old ladder filled with leaves tucked behind a shed. This wonderful lady helped me position the ladder and held it in place while I took about 6 photos. However, upon lowering the ladder we both got showered with leaves and dirt. After getting the ladder down and in place the woman offered me a wet towel to help clean my face and eyes from all the dirt and soot. Through all this, this woman was so pleasant and happy to help me out.

Not only was I thrilled to get these different views but just overwhelmed with the willingness to help out. But, there was another event that was equally memorable but not as pleasant. After a long day and the taking the pictures of St. Anthony's church, school, garden and grotto I was extremely tired and hot. I decided to finish and go home. As I drove down Mansion Street to make a right turn on Beach I saw some guys playing around at the open fire hydrant. I immediately was intrigued and said to myself, that's a cool street memory, just like we used to do when we were kids. As I proceeded to take the few pictures I decided to get one more angle. As I stood there with my camera focused I was doused from behind with about 5 gallons of water from one of the guys. They all had a big laugh at the old white guy. I just raised my hands, sopping wet, from head to toe and said, you got me, and came out with some old Vietnamese lingo, dee dee mow, chu hoy, beaucoupe dinky dow, which were expressions meaning, I'm getting the hell out of here, I give up, and very very crazy. They all looked at me like I was a nut and I got into my car and drove off. I then realized that my camera and cell phone were completely destroyed. Not to worry, the camera was repaired and I had a spare cell phone.

What an experience, one lady offered me a big cold glass of water to quench my thirst, another a wet towel to help me get cleaned up and then a bucket of water to cool me off and to get a few laughs. I wasn't laughing at the time, but it did cool me down and I can chuckle about it now. I guess when we were young we may have done the same if a strange guy of color came around looking around and taking pictures. I wonder, if I was shot instead of being victimized with a bucket of water if that would classify me as being a degenerate. I think not.

For the most part I really enjoyed the experience and would do it all over again and will still go back to take a few more pictures to fill in a few gaps. And, yea, I'd go back with a some of us for a neighborhood tour, but not at night. Just wanted to share these little stories because it seems that the negativity always gets highlighted but somehow and in someway there are still great people in that neighborhood who helped contribute to my taking of some interesting pictures for all of us to enjoy our personal pictoral stories stored in our memory banks. Thanks again for the compliments, it was my pleasure. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

I am currently a Captain in the New York City Police Department, and as a Captain you sometimes are responsible to cover anything big that occurs throughout the entire Borough of the Bronx. One night, around midnight, I receive a text message from the Borough, two people stabbed to death in front of 1776 Mansion Street. I wrote the address down, then thought to myself, "That's St. Anthony's Church! Is nothing sacred?".

So I get over there, and there is one guy stabbed to death, laying in a pool of blood across the street from the church. We foolowed a second trial of blood down Mansion Street to Beach Avenue, turn right on Beach, down Beach to Archer, turn left on Archer, down Archer to Taylor, turn right on Taylor, down several buildings and down the alleys. The second guy is laying there as well. During this whole time all I could think that there was a time when degenerates like these two guys wouldn't even be allowed to walk down the street.

Each time I have to cover the entire Borough, my driver knows to head over to the old neighborhood, and as we sit there I point out history to him: "This is where this happened, this is where that happened". He looks at me like I'm nuts, and I just tell him, "I guess you just had to be there, or else you wouldn't understand".

Matty,

I believe The Informer was his "only" Academy Award. While remembered for Gunga Din, and the John Ford westerns, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande, his only other nomination was, I believe, for portraying "Red" Will Danaher in The Quiet Man. He did not win the award.

While one of my all time favorite movies, The Quiet Man only won a cinematography Oscar for the beautiful Irish countryside.

Hello All: Jim, Good question and Linda, the movie buff, great answer. As an add on or sequela, what was the other academy award (Oscar) awarded to the same actor and for which other movie.

New Question. On one of my recent visits to the old neighborhood I was told about a lot at the end of the 1400 block of Beach ,at the end of the O'leary apartment houses, where there was a rock, and that rock had a name. Anybody know the name of the rock and how it got it's name? I was told the name but not it's origin. I'm sure there is a story about this out there, and I'm sure someone knows it. Jimmy and Linda--Can you remember Victor McLaughlin's characters name in The Informer and who did he turn in??

Keep the dreams alive.

Linda,

You are correct!!! Victor McLaglen won a Best Actor Oscar in 1935 for his portrayal of an IRA traitor in this John Ford production. He also boxed Jack Johnson during his career as a heavyweight fighter in Britain.

I guess with the onset of the internet and available research these questions are not as difficult as they once were. The Informer is not the type of movie that is on TV very often and I wouldn't pick you as a boxing fan. Good job.

John Tell,

Your post regarding "Reilly's" on Tremont triggered a memory. As I recall "Reilly's" was not one of our favorite haunts however; whenever I was in there sports trivia always seemed to be front and center. I recall a guy named Walter always being involved his last name escapes me.

He was a huge boxing fan and gave me an all time great trivia question. Who won an Academy Award for best actor and boxed a heavyweight world champion (prior to his winning the title).

Any guesses? Also if anyone remembers Walter's last name chime in. As Im'writing this the name Karnatz sound familar.

Hi Linda: Funny how everyone remembers that stone. The dogs really liked it. hehehe. It was there forever. Worked great for me when I got a 24" bike for Christmas. I was 6 and needed blocks. So in order to dismount without breaking my neck, sometimes I pulled over to the stone. However, I think Marie Elena was the first one to tell me it was gone. There was a lot of talk when my parents moved as to whether or not we should take it. It was there since my great-grandfather bought the house and the story is true about it being a stepping stone to get in a buggy. Mom gave me some REALLY REALLY old pictures. I have to find the time to get them posted. There's a few that were taken from my yard. Your building however, did not exist yet. It looked like a freakin praire. There's also one of my grandmother pregnant. I meant it...these are old. Back then Parkchester also didn't exist. Thanks for remembering my dog. She lived 16 years, which was a long time for a German Shepherd. We finally put her down when her hind legs went. Even then she was happy a lark as we were driving to the vet. I don't ever remember my father crying they way he did that day. We had her from 4 weeks old. Dad bought her to be a watchdog at his construction business on Morris Park. I'd visit her after school and she would come home on the weekends. Finally, we talked him into leaving her home. She then would escort him to check on me on "THE CORNER". Actually, Dad who was a great artist, painted a fantastic portrait of her. It hangs in the entry hall of Mom's house - appropriatey! SHE LOOKS SO REAL! Anyway..enough of that- before I start crying. Be well everyone. Sue :)

I just spent a very enjoyable half hour touring the old neighborhood in pictures. Many thanks to Matt Keenan. I particularly enjoyed the way you tracked Archer St. from White Plains Rd over to Beach Ave., and then went up Taylor Ave. from The Cross Bronx Expwy. to Tremont Ave. and down Beach Ave. ending at the Cross Bronx. I graduated from St. Anthony's School in 1958 and would love to see comments and responses from folks in that era on this web site too.

I don't know if too many poeple know this, but that tree is much bigger than it looks.... You see when they built the CxBronx they actually raised the street, so what you see of the tree is really the top.

I also think I was wrong about Danny Cunningham losing his car there. The more I thought about that, I think he was in Reilly's that day, not the C'MON INN. Ah the good old Come On Inn, this was actually a franchised name from the south, where there were quite a few taverns with that same name. So in the late 50,s that name had to be bought but i am not sure if the owner the the afore mentioned establishment actualy purchased the franchise rights?

It was a hole in the wall place, but many a good evenings spent there after the beer rackets at the BIC ,,,,,,ahhhh the great times up there ,,,friday and saturday nights $3.00 for all the beer you could drink from 9p/m till 1 p/m,

They started the rackets originally serving the beer in glasses but after the 1st night a fight broke out and the following week they went to styrofoam so as to limit the damge to the patrons heads.
Also the beer they use to serve on racket night was yukon club which was a real rat gut beer, all the taps had schaefer tops but only one had the real brew, and if you were from Archer Street the bouncer Tommy would give the high sign to the bartender to make sure we got the real stuff, seeing we use to go up there with at least 40-50 guys and girls at a clip.

Many a great evening spent at the Irish Center

Richie Roth, thanks for your compliment and I sympathize with your sentiments. While we all have wonderful memories of the neighborhood there are also some somber and poignant ones as well. While not knowing your brother very well I do remember him well along with the incident you spoke of surely hit home. At that time I was on winter recess from college and was back in the Bronx from Syracuse. It was a tumultuous time and that day was certainly a very sad day for the neighborhood. God bless you and your family and thank you for sharing a difficult moment. It gives us all a certain perspective to pause and reflect that there were some not some pleasant moments and we should never forget them, as well. When I was taking the pictures I knew that for myself and others there would surface some feelings such as yours. With no disrespect to that experience I am quite amused by this spelling bee of the name of a bar. It all started with Linda asking a simple question of the correct spelling of the name of a bar on Tremeont and Commonwealth which she remembered as the "Com On In". Apparently, Jimmy Scanlon then said that it was the "Come On Inn" however the "e" and one of the "n's" disappeared. But then Sue Sirca claims it was the "Come On In". So she must have seen the bar when the "n" was taken but before the "e" was taken. Then Claire said it was the "Com on Inn" so she must have seen the bar after the N was put back but after the "e" was taken. Confused, I am. Linda you sure stirred the pot with this one. Then we have John Tell saying it was the "C'mon Inn" which is seconded by Jimmy Carolan as the true name but we hear it was a den of iniquity which he has not frequented but a place for which he and John seem to know an awful lot about. It seems there is something to be said about reading between the lines. Finally, we have Richie Roth claiming and betting the Ranch on the name of the bar being the "Come on Inn" which comports to Jim Scanlons version before the "e" and "n" mysteriously disappeared. Hey guys and gals, we have a dilemna here. What was it, who is right. Anybody have a phone book from 1970? How about the records of the Alcohol Beverage Commission. It seemed like a simple question and we have six different answers. Sorry, I can't contribute on this one. Never been to the place, I went to other dens. Linda, I'm sure someone amongst us all will clarify this mystery. Have a good weekend to all. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matty Keenan

John,

I too recall hearing about the incident you spoke of.

Another flashback brings to mind a young man clad in a turban, due to an unfortunate accident involving 50 stitches, John Shanley, Ellen's beauty parlor window and a game of "Chinese Checkers", waiting "outside" the C'Mon Inn for his friends to return from a party in Queens. To his dismay they returned in various states of disarray spinning yarns about an unfortunate encounter with some hoodlums. I believe some of those involved were Artie Quinn, Stanley Mankowski, John Ditombee and oh yeah, KEVIN BOURKE. Funny how his name keeps popping up. Anyway another tale six degrees of the C'Mon Inn.

Jimmy... I do vaguely remember some of the other fellows
relating those stories and other tales of hijinx that went on in the C'mon Inn and other such places of ill repute...

One such story involved a misguided youth who though not of legal drinking age had become quite the regular at the C'mon Inn...when the big day arrived, his 18th birthday, he asked the proprietor John Spano to indulge him a congratulatory drink...

John was quite taken aback to learn one of his regulars had just reached the legal drinking age of 18...Mr.Spano immediately instituted a major crackdown and had everyone's proof checked...a few of the underage lads, had to go back to having their spirits in the school yard and needless to say they were not a happy lot...This may be where Kevin Bourke could fill in some of the missing details...<:~)

Again, I heard this tale second hand, but I am quite sure of its' veracity...<;~)

John Tell,

I am with you John, I would never frequent such a place as "The C'Mon Inn". Unfortunately some of our "peers" did not posses our restraint and did, on occassion, have a cocktail there.

I remember "them" telling me stories about a near riot with a motorcycle gang caused by Johnnie "Truck" Truglio as well a small problem with an underage patron and the bartender Freddy Hensel. I also "heard" about a trip to a Yonkers bar named "Catherine's Cafe" to visit a C'Mon Inn Barmaid at her other job.

What memories, it's a shame "we never" experienced them. For all the real details we'll have to ask Kevin Bourke.

Matt Keenan and ...
I've finished my tour of the new Stratton Pk.and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great roof top shots.
In someone's previous posting it was mentioned that guys chased each other from the roof of one apt. building to another. In the 50's there was a boy named Terence who died doing this. I believe it happened on Taylor between Archer and Guerlain. Tragic.
A funny memory.. in preparation for construction of the XBX and/or the large apt. building near Noble field there were very large pipes stored on the lots. My friend and I had fun running through them. That night I was washing my hair in the old tub next to the kitchen sink when my Mom looked at the water. It was red/orange. She thought I had been dyeing my hair. I was a little young for that. It was from the rust of the pipes rubbing against my hair.
The shots of Thieriot brought back memories. Where the Co-Ops now stand we used to sleigh ride. I also remember ice-skating there after a thaw and then a freeze. On the Leland side of the Thieriot lots a Leland dentist used to dump his chalky teeth molds. Believe it or not, we used them as chalk. That section of the St. was also closed as a play st. and I can remember skating there and the boys playing hockey.
There was a small funeral parlor on Commonwealth near Tremont. I believe it was near the apt. building. It was managed by a Kelly family.
I liked looking at all the houses. All sizes and shapes, flat roofs, peaked roofs, some below street level. Most seemed to be in pretty good shape. Streets looked very clean, except for your humorous shot!
I don't know anything about the Parkchester statues, but my sister went to a lecture or listened to a tv show about them.
I am enjoying reading everyone's memories of the neighborhood.
Thanks again Matt.

HELLO just keep getting SPAM.Have to do over.MATTY,still cruising the streets of STRATTON PARK.I am now in the TREMONT AVE.SECTION.It appears that you were standing right smack in the middle of traffic to get the desired shot.To my recolection that particular corner was a bit on the wild side.Cars from 180th. st.train station racing and making that swerve going towards White Plains Rd.Also adjacent to where it appears you were standing I think was the tavern known as the "COM ON IN".WAS IT SPELT THAT WAY? I am not sure. Also, you brought back to me a memory of JOHN DITOMBE(SPELL NOT SURE).He lived across from the tavern on TREMONT.What a shame I liked him.He seemed to be a nice guy and very smart.I wonder what has happend to him since he became ill. What a shame, such a young guy to become so sick.Hope he has found some peace where ever he is!!!I,M heading for the HIGHSCHOOLS next.HAY THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.TO ALL HAVE A GREAT DAY LINDA HALL

My fondest memories are of White Plains Road and growing up in that neighborhood. Archer, Taylor. My grandparents Sue & Joe Ferraro lived at 1467 White Plains Rd for over 50 years with their children Rosalie (my Mom), Jo-Jo and Gloria. My Uncle Joe past away quite prematurely in 2004. My aunt lived upstairs (Cusano) and my other aunt lived at 1449 (Salzo). I spent al lot of time with my cousin Chris Salzo and Laura Miller. My Uncle Joe Miller lived at 1505 Leland up until last month when he past away. My mother's best friends were Dolores Lopez-Margarita, June Genovese-Amato, Cynthia Polant Santulli. Lois Frohnhoeher-Lamia. As many of you know June past away last month and Dolores past away in 1997. I very fondly recall going to the candy store for a vanilla egg cream with my father. Many walks with my grandmother to Leonards, Parkchester and Pelham Parkway. My parents moved to Westchester in 1966, but many of our weekends and holidays were spent on White Plains Road. My grandmother would serve coffee and cake in front of the house every night during the warm weather and the kids would wait for Stevie to come so we could get ice cream. It was the best place to be a kid any i often wish i could go back in time and make it last forever. If anyone out there remembers my Mom or my family I would love to hear from you. Happy Memories!!

The only person I knew who lived on Guion? was a Spanish guy named Nene/Chicandine.(around 1973) and I'm quite sure he was never an Archer Ram. The only person I knew with a pet monkey was Franky Bazoro (?spelling). He used to hang out in 102 Park with it. It was nasty little thing if I remember correctly.

Dear Linda Hall, Claire Scanlon, John Tell, Pat Dillon, Marie Elena Riggio, Lydia Beatty, Regina Buckley and everyone: Thank you for your kind thoughts and expressions of appreciation for the photo array of our Stratton Park neighborhood. And, you are more than welcome, it was my pleasure and joy to do this current day photo display. In fact I'd like to add a few shots of some nooks and crannies missed and I have asked the web site master, Mike Cronin if he could arrange the Archer Street and Taylor Ave. photos so they are displayed in a more fluid manner. In a few days I will write a story about the experience which involves some very nice experiences and one not so nice. For now, I'd like to answer some of the questions that have been asked and comment on some of the reactions. Some things have changed and some remain the same, with enough the same to bring us all back to nostalgia lane. The pictures were all taken on a Saturday or Sunday during the months of May, June and July. The four visits all started in the morning but were finished in the afternoon. So, I cannot explain why the streets were so empty. The High School pictures were taken all in one day as a separate trip. I was amazed to realize that different people had related to certain pictures giving them special significance. Linda Hall, who accompanied me on one final day to take a few missing shots and inspired me to take the pictures of the figurines and statues in Parkchester and her flashback of the good old Loew's theatre with that wonderful balcony was just great. It was extra special to share the picture taking with someone else from the neighborhood and exchange our personal memories and stories. Thanks, Linda. John Tell brought up some interesting info on the PS 102 ballfield shrinking. I wondered why they couldn't just build into the schoolyard and save the ballfield. Imagine a NYC playground and no basketball court.By the way John, what is the meaning of IMHO, sounds like a health plan. Lydia's eye seemed to be caught by Leonard's bakery, yes they had great sicilian pizza before anyone else was making it. Lydia, that cute little house on Leland Ave and Guerlain is depicted in two shots. The first one shows the house after a fire, the second shot was taken a few weeks later when I saw that it was an empty lot. They say a larger multi family dwelling will be built, so I guess another picture of that corner will have to be added next year. Also, the house Lydia described as Dr. Liebowiz, across the street on Leland and Guerlain is the house where I and my family lived on the second floor for twenty years. In fact Dr. Liebowits was not the owner but a tenant of the Delbalso family who built the building and occupied three apartments. Clairfe, happy to know that the pictures brought you back to the point of wanting to ga back, but maybe you'd like to think about that for awhile. All things considered I was very happy with the result and very appreciative of all the great reactions I have received. It seems that the saying that a "picture says a thousand words" can be changed to say that a "picture can tell a thousand stories". It would be great to hear more of those many stories from more of you guys and gals and I just hope some of the pictures can bring out some fond memory to be shared with us or your loved ones wherever you may be. Thanks again, hope all is well and may everyone have Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

Matt, Once again, thanks for the photographs. There's a photo of Dr. Leibowitz' old house on Guerlain/corner of Leland. A few years ago that house was boarded up & up for auction. I actually considered putting a bid for it, but my husband was not interested. Whoever bought it did a great job of refurbishing. It looks wonderful. The last time I was in the neighborhood, I noticed the little brick house on the other corner of Leland/Guerlain was gone. This was the house with Sammy the white husky. It used to be such a nice, neat brick house & it's been torn down. I was wondering if any one knows why?

Matty, great pictures of the "new" old neighborhood...<:~)

Looking at what they did to the ballfield of PS 102 is really sad though IMHO...

Recently my Mom was telling me that the Bd Of Ed wanted to do that years ago but our parents had enough political clout to prevent them from destroying our ballfield...

It's too bad the Bd. of Ed. were allowed to carry out their plan depriving the current residents from enjoying what we had growing up...oh well...<:~(

Dear Matty still going through your pictures.I started out in the afternoon,Sunday. What can I say,FANTASTIC.I will continue my adventure down memory lane today.Matty, you really did it this time!!!You captured everything so perfectly!!!Your appreciation of the neighborhood and I think what we all appreciated at the time is now there right before us.We will never forget.I found myself actually walking the block you depicted as I went down each one. What a trip I took.I loved the one of the MOVIE THEATRE IN PARKCHESTER.I saw many a good movie in that place.I remember it as if it was yesterday.Standing on line waiting for my ticket. What did it cost back then?Gosh don,t remember.I do remember always getting my soda and popcorn with raisinets.Would mix it together.O and I can,t forget my BON BONS.What was a movie without my goodies. We would also run to the balcony for a great seat.I remember my last movie on the balcony before they converted it to many mini theater,s.I think the last movie I seen on the balcony with my young son was "JAWS".He was saying under his breath,"I want to get out of here".He was a bit scared. What the heck so was I.Hey remember the franks as they rotated on the machine at the candy counter. They looked so good just going round and round.I,ll have mine with a little mustard and onions. You captured the statues too.I remember when I first moved to White Plains Rd.I looked up and what!I saw what I thought was a real person suspended in mid air.I soon realized it was just a statue.
But I always had such a fasination for them.I never realized they were all so different.I better take a break I could go on and on with this one. They don,t call you MATTY THE MAGNIFICENT FOR NOTHING.MATTY U did a great thing here and you should be very proud of yourself.THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.LINDA HALL

Matt, I just wanted to thank you for those gorgeous pictures you posted of the old neighborhood today. I don't know when you took those pictures, was it like 5 o'clock in the morning? Because I was just there this August on a hot Saturday afternoon & the streets were packed. The pictures really are beautiful, thank you so much.

I saw the picture of Leonard's bakery on White Plains Rd. I can't believe it's still there. I know the original owner's no longer there because he sold whild I still lived on Leland. Does anyone remember the delicious Sicilian pizza he used to sell? My sister worked at that bakery while Leonard still owned it & she never got the recipe.
Also, does anyone remember Nick's heroes on Morris Park Ave. How the hell did they make the egglplant on the combination with eggplant hero? Was is fried, breaded? My husband has been trying to copy that recipe for years. He gets close, but never quite there.

I haven't been able to get a good hero sandwich since I left the Bronx.

Thanks Matt. The pictures are great.

Hi Fred, I am still trying to remember you. I mentioned you to my brother Frankie and he is just so excited about this site. He will be looking at it soon. Do you remember the German deli on Archer st. it was called Franks Deli, and sams candy store? By any chance does any one remember the Goon??? Talk about being fast on your feet. She loved to run after the kids!! What about the woman who called herself the captian of the block??? She lived in the private house where that big tree use to be. Alot of families would give her a dollar per month to keep the neighbor nice!! I remember the go-carts made for wooden milk crates, carriage wheels, nails, and wood planks with rope. Does anyone remember Skellsee (I know it is spelled wrong) We would use caps with melted crayons in it for the game pieces?? 1574, That was the building across from the lots, YES?? Talk soon, Celanie.

Hi Marie, My parents had stayed in the Bronx until they died. As for my family we moved up in the country. We always wanted a home in the country and God opened a door for us. It is very beautiful, lots of trees, woods, mountians etc. It was the best thing for our son David who also had sever asthma attacks, approx. 27 per year. The times everyone had in the city have always been dear to me. Our children look at the old pictures and are just amazed how things were. Do you remember the times we played in the lots. There was a woman in the house right next to it and sometimes she would chase us out. We would use the big rocks as a slide in the winter.Talk soon.

Established in 2003, This page is a monument to a little spot in the Bronx called Stratton Park. Once the name of a thriving community, it describes a part of the Bronx situated between White Plains Road to the Bronx River Parkway, East Tremont Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway. The neighborhood was named for a real estate developer, John Stratton O'Leary, who starting in 1926 built blocks of apartment buildings that would become the heart of Stratton Park. His buildings were also known un-officially as the O'Leary Flats. The Purpose of this web site is to remember Stratton Park and to pay tribute to John O'Leary and the many others that made it a great place to live, work and play. Please visit our Message Board to see what other have said and perhaps add your own remembrances and facts.
