Vinnie , My God it so great to see you on here, when we last talked, on the phone at the Mud Bowl this past winter,it was like i had just left you up at 102, the night before, we didn,t skip a beat. You sounded exactly like you did way back when, can you believe it has been 40 years , give or take a few of course, and the friendships created so long ago are still the same , this little kingdom of ours, Stratton Park , has solidified such true and solid relationships , that no one from other neighborhoods can possibly understand.
I am looking forward to seeing you this July at the picnic and i am sure we will have quite a few stories to talk about and of course laugh our butts off reminicing the wackey things we did in our youth. So till than Vinnie stay well and Matty I am still using the Spaldeen with the kids that live on my block in N.J..thanks again Matty

Hi there Vinnie: Great to see you on the site and you never was a wuss and never will be. Just getting on the site to share is proof of that. I know you have some great stories to come our way. I Figured I take this chance to be your neighbor on the site. After all, we were neighbors, literraly, right next door to each other in the early 50's before the playground was built but had our own playhround in your backyard, the Dondero's and the Zucker alleyway. Your right, nothing could be better than to have friends especially those you started out life with. This is just great to be getting back together. See ya soon, my old chum/ Love, peace and Happiness. Matty

How about the Ever Green Chineese Rest. next store. Don't Cook Tonight Call Chicken Delight on Sterling. Or Hogan's Bar by St. Helena's. White Castle on Castle Hill & Bruckner before the expressway was built. Or Wetson's before Mickey D's opened. Going thru the back doorgetting on the 13 bus..Back to work. Hi to all you readers.

I don't know why I thought of this, I guess it's Church memories. I loved all of the pomp and circumstance that surrounded Christmas midnight Mass at St. Anthony's. I loved the sight of people wearing Christmas presents eight hours too early, the crunch of snow beneath my feet on the way to Church, the smell of burning incense, and the sound of Choir solos during the ceremony. I loved the smile of neighbors, wives nudging husbands for falling asleep during Mass, and the smell of alcohol on half the Church's breath. I remember hearing a crashing sound during the sermon one year and waking up to find everyone around me looking at me. I had partaken of the Christmas cheer a little earlier in the evening, had nodded backwards and smashed my head loudly on the back of the pew. My resulting Christmas present was a big lump on the back of my head. I think many of my personal problems can be traced back to that moment!? On the way out of the Church that year more than a few parishoners went out of their way to bid me "A very special Merry Christmas to you, Mr. Acunzo."

In 6th grade Sister Margaret decided it was time to explain the "birds and the bees" to us very immature people. She did use the actual words to describe our various body parts. This of course sent the class into a snickering frenzy. But I will never forget her analogy - she said to think of it as women having the lock and men having the key. Okay, enough said on that subject. Did any of you get a similar talk?

Hi Diane.
Joey & I started school together in the 3rd grade at P.S.102. To this day we are best of friends. In fact we were dating sisters and never knew it. now we are bother-in-laws. (we married the sisters). The sister by the way are Jean & Rosemarie. They live at seperate homes back in the 60's. I used stay at the Paino's all the time, with Patty, Kenny, Glenn, Pat & Barbara (joey's sisters). And as you know many more. Please e-mail me if you get a chance. Harold and I hung out alot. We had some great times in the basement of his bulding. I had a crush on Ruthie.
The best to you and yours.

Dear John your up with the birds I see me too.Well I think she loved all the cutie pies that were adorable.I know this because my next to the youngest brother Andy was a cutie himself. So theres your answer.Actually John she was nice to everyone but she did have her favorits. She was soooo nice but because her temperment was that way. When she was mad or upset whatever her emotions were. She would certainly show it.This I remember well only because she was always so nice.I remember her face even being red when she was not her self but again for the most part she was a doll.Hope to see you and Annie at the picnic.Again Frankie Truglio e-mailed me and is expecting a reply but his e-mail address is not showing up.Are you and Annie going to the race track to see him?Well Marion a quick hello and a possible answer to another question I missed.I think the show may have been"Good Times"with Jimmy Walker or maybe "Whats Happening" I remember in Good Times Jimmy made the word dy-no-mite very popular. We say dynamite because of our bronx or I do anyway.Matty do you remember any church stories.I think you told me a few.How about the dances in the gym class what were they again.Did we do square dancing I sort of remember that.It was my favorite time out of class.I also remember a few more of our slang back then how about riped off and hassle.

Hello All: Hope all is well.
Marion: Don't recall nap time but knowing myself there was a lot of napping and a little bit of day dreaming.
Claire: How about the "crowd". There was always a "crowd" somewhere at the 102 playground or a variety of corners. There were also "Finks", those goody two shoe tattletalers, traitors. Ahh yes, A good sound, not appropriate for writing here, would be verbally recognized as group would say SOOOUUUNNDD and a good retort would get a SOOUUNND ON THE REBOUND.
John Tell: Maybe it's a hidden secret. A good friend of mine at St. Ray's, his father was a fireman at a fire truck facility located at the North garage at the smoke stack/power house on Tremont across from the tracks. We used to go in there and climb on the trucks. How's that for some trivia. Oh well, not really, but a good try. My only point was that while we certainly had a great neighborhood many of the things we needed were located outside the neighborhood, and your right that there was no firehouse in Parckchester. Sorry, if I intimated that there was. I believe the closest fire house to Stratton Park was one down in Morris Park. Take care. Hope to see the "crowd" at the picnic in about 5 weeks. Love, Peace and Happiness, Matt

Here's a question. Do you remember in St. Anthony's in the younger grades, the teacher would have us put our heads down on the desk for a "nap." Did anyone actually fall asleep? I was too nervous and uncomfortable to sleep in school and would always peek out to see if anyone else was sleeping. So how many of you actually nodded off during one of these sessions?

Cathy, didn't know Sister Cornelius was that tough - but to put a positive spin on it, at that age, most of us were actually able to memorize a whole paragraph at a time as opposed to now - can't remember a sentence without reading it ten times much less my cell phone number, which took the better part of a year to remember.

Claire, my brother used to say "cool your pits." Was that from some TV show?

Linda, thanks for the support. Can always count on you for a kind word.

Trivia- Linda, thanks fot the stab at my trivia question about the store near the Loews American with the miniature shopping carts. I was thinking of the Horn & Hardart. It had only a few aisles hence the miniature carts. Their stock was mostly already prepared foods. Kind of a precursor to the convenience foods we have now. It wasn't anything like the Horn & Hardart on Times Square where you put your change in to open those little glass doors.
Vinnie- How good to see your posting! Brings back lots of memories with Susan, you and Ricky.
Marion- Sorry, have to disagree about Sr. Cornelius. I did have her as a teacher. Her method wasn't teaching so much as having everyone read and memorize. Thank God, I could memorize quickly back then but it was embarrassing for the kids who couldn't. When you finished memorizing something you would stand along the wall of the classroom. Some kids just had difficulty memorizing paragraphs out of a book. Heck, when she gave a spelling test she would just say it's time to take your spelling test. She didn't even give us the words, you had to memorize them. So if you forgot what the word was even if you knew how to spell it you were screwed. But she wasn't as scary as some of the other nuns.

Regarding the question "did I have positive experiences at St. Anthony's" not sure if it's directed at me, but if so, the answer is an unequivocal YES. Sure, some of the teacher's were mean but some were great. Sr. Kathleen in the first grade, Mrs. Valentine in second, Mr. Duff and Mr. Jacob, Miss Heaney in 8th grade, and of course Sr. Cornelius was wonderful although I never had her as a teacher.

Mr. Murowski's love for the Blessed Mother was inspiring and so were all the devotions to the Blessed Mother in May. Msgr Ford was and still is the best. If any negativity was detected in some of my previous posts, I can't pretend Sr. Catherine wasn't as Christian as she could have been to me and many others but that's the way it was back then.

Summer in the city!! I remember my mother taking me and my brother to noble field to go in the showers and then a picnic on the grass. Also being up early and playing before the sun beated down in the afternoon. as i got older scared to death of being thrown in the fire hydrant, haha But then it felt good.hanging out late on the corner or the park. Also in front of our buildings at night for it was to hot to sleep, I don't think to many of us had air conditioners. all and all i loved every minute of all those fun memories. The music was great back then also. wouldnt you agree? for now claire scanlon

hi again,
for all of the stratton park kids, who don't remember the cross bronx being built. not to feel bad, that today is my brother patrick's 65th birthday. vince-junior will be 64 in august. the cross bronx being built was a very long time ago. my brothers told me how they use to go swimming with my dad at the bronx beach and pool. or to glenn island. does this bring back any memories for some of you other kids? how about orchid beach and waiting for the very crowded 12 bus, to get there. now that the summer is here, i love remembering all those lazy days of summer, some one always having a radio. my aunt marge use to buy me a beach bag or towel every june for getting a good report card. which i used eiether at 102 park or orchid beach. any body else want to share some wonderful summer story.

hello old & new friends,
happy memorial day wkend. have been busy with my 2 older brothers who are both visiting from florida. so here is the answer to my dear friend linda's questions. the jewelry store in parkchester was russo's.my mom prefered the one on castle hill. regarding the drugstore i told you about. it was doc adler's on archer st. not dukes. i did work at leroys when i was 17 with eileeen keevans. does anyone still have a coupon from harmony's? when you puchased a 45, you got a coupon. 10 of them got you a free 45. lisa luciano and i use to buy our 45's from there. as well as those little yellow plastic things,to hold the 45 on the record player. i was forever loosing them. have been listening to my brother's patrick and junior talk about the old neighborhood. do any of you other kids, remember watching the cross bronx being built and them tearing down houses? patrick was one of the original pidgeon coop guys. had a wonderful conversation with doc at the mudbowl about my brother pat and the pidgeons. have not been on the site, for a while, so forgive me for this mini-novel. hope everyone has a great memorial day wkend. just remember to drive safely. be happy and keep the memories flowing.

Hello All: Hope all is well. I haven't been on in awhile. I see that 49 people have registered to be writers on the site. Now, I know there are a lot more of you guys out there, especially those who read postings but not write them. So, even if you read and not write let's work on getting that number up to over a 100. C'mon, I know we can do it.

Wow, so many topics in the past few weeks. In particular about Parkchester. You know, without Parkchester life in Stratton Park would have been very difficult. There was no fire house, police station, bank, lieberry (spammed word)flower shop, clothing store, shoe store, restaurant, and very few doctors and dentists and not even a restaurant. Can you think of more things that we did not have that we depended on Parkchester for. BY THE WAY CAN ANYONE REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE BOOKSTORE IN PARKCHESTER?

My first job in the neigborhod was at Vic's Reliable Meat Market on Archer Street between White Plains Road and Leland just between the deli and candy store. What a gig, a young teenage Irish kid working with 3 middle age Italian guys. Besides cutting up meat and delivering it, I learned a lot from those guys especially on how to take a good ribbing. One hot summer day the freezer was pretty full so they told me to get a freezer stretcher from the candy store. Like an idiot I went not once but twice, boy did they have a good laugh. On quiet days they would sit by the window and check out everyone who walked by and would always have some coment to make about someone, especially the women. Oh yes, every Saturday Morning I'd wrap up 5 roast beefs and deliver them to the deli next door and another 5 to the deli on Taylor and Archer. I believe I was in every building in the neighborhod and also in Parchester.

Okay, that's enough for now. Hope all is well with everyne and have a memorable Memorial Day and remember that those trees planted outside St. Anthony's in the 1940's are a memorial for our service men and women who served in WWII. Salute someone or everyone. Don't forget to register for the new site. Lets have a drive like those St. Anthony money donation lists and get over a 100 or even 200. The pressure is on. Love,Peace and Happiness to all. See ya at the picnic July 7th. Matt Keenan

A new topic...What was your first job in the neighborhood?

Aside from working at Rocco's for Stewarts hamburgers & Egg Creams(like we all did whenever we were there), I remember my first job was at Thomas' Pharmacy on White Plains Road. I worked after school Tues- Friday & on Sat morning. Andy was the store manager. I don't remember his last name but he was all of 22 years old but he seemed like the coolest guy to me; being all of 14 myself.
To this day I still rember Andy's most important rule that he taught me. His rule was, If a man comes in and buys condoms, always say to him: "Have a nice nite". If it happens on a Friday or Sat, change it to: "Have a great weekend".

The things that stick in your mind.....Again I ask "What was your first neighborhood job?"

Linda, you are correct in you memory of St. Anthony's publishing our families donations. At the time it seemed exciting to see how much or how little your friend's and their families donated. Let's face it, it wasn't very Christian to show up and humiliate people in this manner, but a lot of what went on wasn't very Christian (you could write a book about Sr. Laboure from all the postings in the last few months). Hey what do I know - most of us turned out OK but was it because of what went on or in spite of it?

Jus sitting here and thinking about the old neighborhood and all that was were there for us.We had it pretty good.I too remember my grandmother God rest her soul. She lived to be ninty five.Dee Dee as I called her would take me to Woolworth's.Remember there was a counter top also for all sorts of things to eat.I would love to get the ice cream on the waffles when they were just a wee bit hot.Hummy thanks for the memory.Remember Roda's or Dunkin Donuts on Castle Hill.Does anyone remember the name of the jewelry store in the middle of the block next to Woolworth's?Girls you have to remember Lerners. How about that cute little park as you would enter Parchester from Archer street and that hugh inside parking lot.Remember when we had to go to the post office and went thru Macys to get to the other side. All those little stores I can just about make um out. There was a chinese woman who owned one of those stores and is still there on one of my visits I went in and said hello. She was on the block of the post office wigs and hats in the window.I also remember the St.Raymonds dances and St.Helenas dances when the light show came out and we looked like we were moving in slow motion. This has been on my mind for some time am I wrong or at one time they would put our yearly moneys to the church out so all could see.Well getting to be that time again would be getting ready to watch Johnny "here's Johnny".Have a great day.Linda

I remember St. Clair's restaurant near the Oval. They had a soda fountain and my grandmother would treat us to ice cream sodas there. I think that property may have been a Roy Rogers in later years.
I also remember the Harmony Music store-amazing the number of instruments and albums they squeezed in that tiny place.
Toy Sun- that was one of the more exotic locales in the neighborhood. I remember a friend telling a waiter that her teacup was broken because it didn't have a handle. Forget about eating with chopsticks then.
Trivia- name of the store near the Loews Ameican that had miniature shopping carts.

Did you ever remember something you thought you had forgotten and then something jogged your memory? When I saw the reference to Duke's it just brought me back to 1962. I had always thought it was called Leroy's but now of course I remember the name "Duke" along with the counter. Did they serve food or just beverages? Can you imagine these days walking into your local CVS and getting served at a counter?

How about at Christmas time they had Santa Claus and Raindeer there.
Here's one. My 1st job in J.H.S. was at St Clairs. Anyone remember it. OrCarl's Pizza next to the Palace Movie or Harmony record store with Nat who knew everything about music?
How about then the named the area Yankee Mall by Macy's?

Welcome aboard, Nick. Here's another Parkchester trivia question/memory for you. What was the name of the drug store/fountain shop right across the street from the Loews American? For some reason, it will always stick in my head because there was an older guy who made egg creams, etc. behind the counter there who was an identical twin of a '50s character actor, I think it was Keenan Wynn. I know this is a real stretch, but does anyone remember that "soda jerk"???

Hello Ed Acunzo and happy 55th next Tuesday. Still remember the wild party ypu had in '59. Forced to wear white bucks from First Communion to get some use from 'em. Re the Latin Mass:

Priest: Dominus Vobiscum-may the Lord be with you

Altar Boy: Et cum spiritu tuo-and with your spirit

Priest: Oremus-let us pray

knew let us pray but had to look up "Oremus"

never got hit by Staubach but was read to ad nauseum (more Latin) from the Journal American and Wall St. Journal. He also preferred the RED Morony's Sacramental Wine-probably the firsy wine with a screwtop, like Ripple or Nighttrain Express.

An easy two part question for former altar boys. I'll give the priest's greeting in Latin, you give me the altar boy's reply, and then the priest's response to the parishiners.

You must also give the English translations for all three. If you can't do this properly Fr. Staubach is going to slap you in the back of the head and send you back to the sacristy to refill the wine cruet. Ready?

PRIEST: Dominus Vobiscum. TRANSLATION: ?
ALTAR BOY: ? TRANSLATION: ?
PRIEST: ? TRANSLATION: ?

Good luck, keep your eyes on your own paper and no talking.

hello old & new friends,
hey ed, thanks for bringing back memories of bobby archer, i too remeber him walking the streets at all sorts of hours, in between shadows. he reminded me more of a vampire than a wolf.
have been back to the old neighborhood recently. my brother vince (junior) was visiting for 2 weeks, so we had to back to beach ave. even though the neighborhood is changed so much. it is still so nice to go back with someone who has such fond memories. vince will be 64 in august. so his memories are a lot different than mine. the lots that he played in, was on beach off of archer st. the lots that i played in, was off of east tremont. it was nice to see him smile & tell me about when he was a kid. i still see leland cleaners every day. when i drop my son off at his school. the store is right across from the school, on mace ave. off of williamsbridge ave. by st lucy's church. so dear friends keep the stories flowing & we will keep our memories going. maybe we don't all remember things happening the same way. but at least we still have our memories.

I'm writing a memoir about my experiences in Stratton Park and I'm trying to get a hold of Kenny "Silky" Sullivan to ask his permission about something. We grew up in the same building. It is my recollection that Kenny was shot in the head in a drive by shooting on Tremont Ave by persons unknown and obviously survived, with the bullet only puncturing flesh not skull. I want to mention this piece of trivia as one minor recollection of our youth along with the fact that we were friends who ran the streets, alleys, basements and rooftops of Taylor as kids and want his permission to do so. Can anyone help me reach him?

Final answer to the Spotless Cleaners' trivia question- The woman's name was Eloise. I found my 8th grade autograph book and Eloise signed it. I spent quite a lot of time in and out of her store. When nothing was going on outside, we would help her in the store. She was about the only adult who didn't complain about hanging out in front of their business. Where would the Archer Street crowd have gone if we didn't have a corner to stand on?

Norton motorcycle- Tommy White also had a Norton. He was very considerate, when he dropped me off at my house, he would cut the engine a few houses down so as not to waken my parents.

Does anyone remember the Chinese Laundry on the corner of White Plains and Wood? They would wrap the shirts in paper and tie it with a string.

HIT with flash lights and kneeling on ROCKS HUM. Well I think we have another two jokesters.JIMMY AND JOHN are the other two jokesters.I mean that in a fun way no pun intended. They hung out together and can be alot of fun when they get going on a story. My camp days were very different sang songs on the bus like ONE HUNDRED BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL,THE PEOPLE ON THE BUS GO ROUND AND ROUND.A big difference from your CAMP.Well EDDIE do not know one answer to your TRIVIA.I know the Parchester buildings had a lot of stair cases but I do not know the one yu are talking about or the tall guy on beach.Well EDDIE I think we are all happy your ok it is sad about JOEY AND RONNIE.I have a picture of RONNIE in the pepsi cola truck have to put it on the site.Well from one STRATTON PARK kid to another thanks for the memories Linda

Joe. I thought it was a reform school. I had already been arrested a couple of times and suddenly I'm being sent to this camp that I didn't want to go to, just me and your brother, and we are the only white kids there. Ask him if this wasn't true. We slept in a dorm full of kids and it was patrolled by "counselors" at night armed with big flashlights. If they caught you awake, they either beat you with the flashlight, or took you outside and made you kneel in the gravel for a couple of hours. Does that sound like summer camp? Fighting was constant. WHen I came home and told my parents about the treatment they wouldn't believe me!

Hello Eddie Acunzo,
Funny you mention the St Vincent de Paul camp. My brother just recounted that experience at Christmas time. It sounded like it was less of a camp and more of a place for delinquints from the really bad neighborhoods. We were doubled over laughing as he recounted "the breakout" and subsequent recapture.
As Bobby recounted it, my parents thought they were doing such a great thing by sending him to that camp. It was organized through St Anthony's and on the surface looked like a great deal. My parents didn't have any money to afford a "real" camp and so this was viewed as a real treat. Little did they know it was like sending him to a prison. Needless to say, he never went to camp again. In fact nobody else in our family ever went to camp.

I honestly don't remember Joey and Gerard Pesce. I will ask my brother about them.

Bobby, Nancy and Janie are doing well. Bobby's son is graduating from Cornell this month - following in his father's footsteps. All have kids now and Nancy even has grandkids - 5 of them in fact!

Hey Julie Luciano:
I remember Mrs Bender too. She was strict and I really feared her but as others have implied, she was not as over-the-top as some of the older nuns. I remember making a point of going to her house on Halloween. She and I both got a kick out of that. I viewed her as more of a real human being after that. Imagine that - a teacher having a normal life and living in a real house...;-)

Yes Joe, thanks for reminding me of that slightly exaggerated occurrence. My face is a little red as I type, but deservedly so. The two friends who left me for dead under a staircase on Theriot are both sadly dead from overdoses themselves, but this timex watch ticks on. I've been clean for thirty years. Enough about that. I certainly do remember our hot line. How's Bobby, Nancy, and the rest of your siblings? I'm in the middle of writing a memoir and I mention Bobby and others in it from childhood days. Ask him if he remembers St. Vincent DePaul "Camp" where he and I got sent? We were the only two white kids in the whole place amongst Harlem and South Bronx blacks and Purto Ricans. I'm not stating that in a racist way, just stating fact. I had to beat the snot out of some black kid who was starting trouble with us almost as soon as we got there so all of the rest would leave us alone for the rest of our stay. Then we did fine, though we did run away and got caught by the cops and brought back. Tell Bobby I've had contact with Joey Pesce through posting on this website. DO you remember Joey and Gerard from about forty years ago, they lived on the third floor also?

Linda- Wow, do I remember the infamous graduation hairdos.
The beauty parlor on the corner of Leland and Archer was the culprit. Since we never had our hair professionally styled thought this would be good. But was it Bad! Their clientele was more the blue-haired set than teenage girls trying to look cool. They must have used cans and cans of hairspray. When they were done you could have bounced a basketball off our heads and it would'nt have made a dent. Yes, thankfully my mom let me wash it out. I remember we needed to use a lot of bobbypins for your graduation cap because the cap just perched on the top of your head. But you still looked good in the pictures.

Here's to hoping the new message board will alleviate some issues and allow us to ignore others.

Eddie Acunzo: I thought you were DEAD - od'd to be exact.
Glad to hear you survived! Do you remember the private phone line you and my brother, Bobby, shared. For those who don't know. We lived on the 6th floor of 1576 Taylor and Eddie lived on the 3rd floor directly below. My father got a set of phones and rigged it so that all you had to do was pick up the receiver and it rang at the other end. The phone line was strung outside the building through the fire escapes. Now THAT was really cool stuff back in the 60's!

Todd Frenchman:
Good to hear from you! I swear I do NOT remember that curb ball incident. But it certainly sounds like something that would have happened to me...
As far as egg creams, I never had any money to spend so I had only sampled the egg creams from Minnie's so she gets my vote by default.

Gail Butler:
I remember you and my sister, Nancy, being pretty much inseparable. She'll be thrilled to hear from you.

Julie Luciano:
It was great to hear from you!
I only walked into the St Anthony's cafeteria once during lunch time (I got back early from running home, downing my sandwich and running back) and I just about gagged from the wonderful aroma. From that point on I never regretted not eating there!
I remember the pickle barrel at Carl's too. I guess all that brine killed any chance of live organisms. Great pickles! Now THAT is something you won't see today!

I'll stop here rather than risk the wrath of the SPAM filter.

She lived in that apt. about 50 years. She was one of the best teachers I had at St. Anthony's. Definitely not as scary as some of the nuns. She was imposing though, tall with ramrod straight posture. Her daughter, Ellen, attended St. Anthony's. Her husband, Lou worked at Pape Chevrolet on Tremont.

Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms and Grandmas out there.

John Tell, for a supposed "memory challenged" individual you seem to have an uncanny knack for remembering, with clarity, quite a few "incidents".

Who could forget Sam's broken plate glass window. I think it was the only time I listened to my mothers advice about running away if you were innocent. Where did it get me, the 43rd Pct. in the company I might add, of another innocent individual who frequents this site.

John, do you remember who really broke the window by pushing Stanley Mankowski into it?

You will then know why the “Hot Lunch Program at St. Anthony’sö was the topic of discussion this week.

Hello to all.I do not know about you but all these past posts really have been making me chuckle. So I will do my best to do the same.I was telling my parents about the school lunch room disasters.I then asked my mom if she had remembered anything pertaining to the subject she did and I am not surprised. She remembered us protesting and telling her the food was not as good as we would of liked. She then said she thought we may have been exagerating. So she went along for TWO weeks until my brother ANDY who by the way was always particular about what he ate said,"mommy the lasagna looks like GUTS".She then said,"that was it" and took us out of the program. My lunch room days were over thank God for small favors and Andy for being so discriptive.Well we both had a good laugh ourselves.Andy did not remember any of it lucky him.As far as any other school room pranks there were so many.I remember one of the boys putting ink in the holy water at the door in our lovely SISTER THERESAS CLASS.We all planed to pretend to say our morning prayers saying the words with nothing coming out.If you remember Sister Theresa could not hear that well.We also put shaving cream and tooth paste on the chork and in her desk.Even a playboy center fold went up on the door to the class room. She was flying around the room on her broom that day.Well as far as I remember she was not nice and that is putting it mildly.Well again I hope you all have a great weekend and thanks for sharing your stories all the time with me.Linda

I am in London on a business trip but had to chime in with some memories of John Shanley and St Anthony's. I carry a reminder of "Lea" with me daily. A 55 stitch scar on my head from when he knocked through Ellens Beauty Parlor window while playing "Chinese Checkers". I know John Tell remembers the day, there was blood everywhere.

As for St Anthony's, as with Eddie Acunzo, we were no strangers to "Spitball". In the 6th grade, St Edwardine's class, Celeste Beheringer squealed on us when things were getting pretty serious. Sister Laboure marched us all to Monsignor Colemans office in the rectory. Where in the middle of his sermon on how ill behaved we were, Alphonse Striano started a fire in his waste basket. Needless to say Alphonse never made it to seventh grade.

You guys amaze me. I wouldn't be able to remember the name of one single nun or teacher from grammar school on my own, but when I see one of you mention them by name, I remember the names without being able to connect them to specific memories. I don't remember which nun it was, but we were practicing for first holy communion in the Church. They used to use that clicker thing to signal the group when to sit, stand or kneel, remember? On the last practice before the ceremony I missed the cue to kneel because I was talking. I wasn't fooling around, I was excited about making my Communion. The nun flew up the isle and snatched me out of my pew by my arm and shook me around, telling me and everyone within fifty feet that I was going to hell for not appreciating the sanctity of this momentous occasion. She was a bride of Christ, she must know what she was talking about. Six years old and already damned! I burst into tears in horror and embarrassment. I've already blown it. My mother actually had to put me back together again and convince me that the Lord knew my heart and wouldn't condemn me to eternal fires. At least not yet. Ah yes, some of them could be so sensitive to our budding sense of spirituality during our formative years!

I have vivid memories of the St. Anthony's lunches,I used to sneak Neslte's Quick to mix into my milk because I hated plain milk. But the most vivid memory I have is when I was in 8th grade. Remember how we used to stuff our uneaten lunch into the milk containers when we didn't want to eat it? Well I was at lunch and the younger sister of one of the girls at my table was also in our lunch period. Sister Catherine was garbage monitor- making sure that everyone ate their food and wasn't trying to throw it out. Well she caught my friends sister trying to throw out food in her milk container; sister Catherine made her sit down and start to eat the food out of her milk container. The little girl started to cry and gag. My girlfriend saw this and ran across the cafeteria and punched Sister Catherine!! She was of course suspended but she was the hero of out entire lunch period.

I also had Mrs Bender - she was a nice teacher. I remember one year being shocked when I was trick or treating on Halloween and she answered the door (I guess I didn't think that teachers ever left the school)! She was very nice and had pretty good candy I recall.

Hi Linda:

Just want to mention that I had Mrs.Bender too and she use to pull the hair out of my head, however she was from the old school and a darn good teacher and strict to say the least. Does anyone remember the ice-cream, probably the best on the menu, little squares wrapped in heavy paper and you could lick them from either open side.

Hello that was a good recall of LEA and his lunch JOHN and also a good question. As far as me and the lunch room I lasted a few months myself.I hated eating down there and so did my brother. We protested to the point we drove my mother nuts. She gave in and let us come home for lunch thank God.All I can say is UCK.EDDIE you too that was a good one also.I remember getting hit plenty of times with rubber bands and all sorts of things. The sixth grade was a good yr.for spit balls in our class.I know I was one of the people who would throw them.We had a lovely teacher Mrs.Bender who lived on Leland she was very nice and I remember her being very quiet about the whole thing. When she would turn her back at least a hundred of those rolled up little pieces of paper were being hurled around the room.Well it must of been the the spit ball grade. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all you mothers out there and to those who have lost there mother may you find peace and comfort in your fond memories of her.LOL Linda

Hello All: Well here is a twist. Yes, my classmate John Shanley, for 8 years, was banned from the St A's lunchroom for tossing food to clean his plate, but imagine this, I was not allowed to eat the lunch even though I wanted too. For one year, second grade, I ate at the lunchroom when my brother Jim was born to give my Mom a break. I guess, one day I was thrilled to not have those string beans and mashed potatoes and was so happy to have hot dogs. I got my plate of fancy hot dogs, beans and saurkraut and just as I put my plate down and ready to have a feast, I threw my woolen hat up to the ceiling and caught it behind my back. In about three seconds Sister Laboure tapped me on the shoulder and told me to stand in the corner and I couldn't leave until everyone was finished. It was, at the time very embarassing, but worst of all, I never got to embelish those great tube steaks. The good news was that after that year I never went back and my Mom's peanut butter and jelly with chocolate milk at home was just grand. Thanks, Mom and Happy Mothers day to all our Moms and to the Moms among us now. May everyone have Love, Peace and Happiness and a wonderful weekend. Matt Keenan

I am sure many of you got creative when dealing with the scrumptious cuisine of St. Anthony's hot lunch. We would hide mashed potatoes, peaches, string beans and all that other yummy stuff under the plates, under the table, in the napkin - anywhere so long as we didn't have to eat it and didn't get caught by either Sr. Labore or Sr. Catherine.

When my brother was in the 2nd grade, he did not particularly care for the menu that day, so Sr. Catherine made him sit in the lunch room until dismissal. She didn't realize that he was even more stubborn than she. He refused to touch the food in spite of the threats, punishments and stories of bad little boys who go to hell because they would not eat their food. Maybe my brother didn't exactly win that battle but I guess you could say it was a draw.

I just caught John Shanleys interview on NY1...he related a story about how he was "banned-for-life" from St. Anthony's lunch room...

For some strange reason he didn't like the powdered mashed potaoes on the menu, and so instead of eating EVERYTHING on his plate as per the dictates of the good Sisters,he would secretly(so he thought) place his fork beneath the offending "potatoes" and fling them as hard as he could over his shoulder...thus the banishment...<:~)

Any other good lunchroom stories out there ?...

Matty, you are right about Larry Cole's football ability, he was the freshman QB on Cardinal Hayes and looked to have a nice HS athletic career ahead of him...as you stated, he once wore that "Forrest Gump" type metal b r ace on each leg, so it was no small feat for him even to play football never mind to be a standout...

Larry ran away to Florida in his sophmore year...being one of his closer friends I was given the "third degree" by Cardinal Hayes' infamous Dean of Discipline, Father McCormack, as to Larry's whereabouts...Larry returned to the neighborhood about a year later with quite a tale of adventureous exploits (wine women and song)...he even sported a manicure that he was very proud of, at this point in my sheltered life I was impressed to say the least, I didn't even know men got manicures ...<:~)

Larry disappeared a short while later and I've never been able to track him down...Larry in my mind was one the many very interesting charcters to come out of The Neighborhood...

Hello All: Hope all is well. I'd like to clear up something that came up last week. We, Stratton Parkers, on and off this site have a certain respect for each other. Consequently, as a matter of politeness and courtesy many of our messages are written to specific people and messages may seem to be private emails between close friends when, in reality, someone may not even know or have ever met the person they are writing to. I know, for myself that I write many messages to people whom I never met and many writings are addressed to me from folks I don't know. That is what makes this site so interesting because some of the connections they are nourishing and flourishing.

Okay, John Tell: Larry Cole. That is a very intersting question and I know it is not the first time you have asked. I have no idea but that he simply left the neighborhood never to be seen or heard from again. I recall first meeting him at home plate at 102 playground when I was about 10. I was so intrigued with his tenacity to ply sports and his ability. The scene at the beginning of the movie "Forest Gump", of the boy running away from some tormentors until his stell legged hardware fell off. As a fast kid I was quite moved. He was a fun guy. Since, I kind of left the neighborhood in 1965 I heard stories of his foot ball kicking abilities. I'm sure some of you guys and gals can come up with some good stories of Larry Cole. Have a nice day and a great weekend. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

John Tell & Eddie Acunzo,

Regarding Pete Di Severio's car, I believe you are both correct. I recall a Blue Chevy SS that was pristine and would be considered a "muscle car". I also however recall Pete and Wilkie "cruising" in a black Olds 98 convertible that was not quite as well kept as the SS.

Here is a related question. What was Pete's sisters name who worked in Pioneer and who, it was rumored could be found in the arms of Jerry oy Cy on occassion?

Like John Tell, I am also intriqued as to what happened to Larry Cole.

I did say I was a little fuzzy myself, I have more than occasional bouts of "CRS" also. John Tell you are correct, Wilkie was the pole bender. You guess Mike Sweeney's car was Tommy Steed's 442. You may be right, but I thought the one he ran into a wall was a GTO. Mike Sweeney is also the photograher of "Guys from the Cave" on page 11 of this website. John, our memories differ on Petie's car also. I know it was a blue convertible, and he'd break your arm if you sat on it. I thought it was a Super Sports. We may need to get the historians to comment, Jimmy Carolan and Matt Keenan. Do you guys have any room in your minds for current events? Petie's dad was a "made guy," possibly a lieutenant on Pleasant Avenue in Harlem. Do you know his nickname? Frank you should know this one through your cousin Louie Corrado.

Linda HALL, the above is a perfect example of the infamous "CRS Syndrome" that you were asking about... in laymans terms it translates to "Can't Remember Sh*#"...<:~)

Eddie Acunzo, I know Ronnie Wilkie was the "pole bender", and Mike Sweeney I think bought Tommy Steeds' Oldsmobile Cutlass 442...

And a wild guess on Pete The Boppers' car... could it be an Oldsmobile 98...

What kind of a muscle car did Big Pete De Siverio drive?

What kind of muscle car, his dream car, did Mike Sweeney wreck on the X-Bronx Xpress before the insurance had a chance to kick in?

Who, when he was healthy (just out of jail), could bend "no parking" signs to the ground by hand?

All this talk of food. I loved the egg creams at Jack's candy store, corner of White Plains & Archer. I also remember Minnie at Minnie's on Archer St. She would make home made hot chocolate and add a scoop of vanilla ice cream, no extra charge. While we're on the subject of food: does anybody remember the Sicilian pizza at Leonard's Bakery on White Plains Rd? Or how about the eggplant combo heroes at Nick's on Morris Park Ave? Eddy, I do remember that restaurant in Parkchester that would serve your food on a choo-choo train. What a great idea! If I ever come into a load of money I want to open a restaurant that serves food on a train. I also would open a really nice drive-in movie theater.
I remember when the Baskin & Robbins opened in Parkchester. My sister (Lori Beatty) & her girlfriend (Denise Schiavone) had a crush on an older guy who worked there. They were both probably 12 or 13. They asked the guy for a sample of every single one of the 31 flavors. They got thrown out. So much for their flirting.

hello old & new friends,
i love all this talk of eggcreams. i happen to have an original malted machine from my mom's luncheonette (1952-53). i showed it to todd & some other old friends when we got together last month. i also have 2 of those long necked spoons, that you egg cream experts are talking about. sorry to say my brother had all the original glasses too & sold them at a yard sale. mom had her shop somewhere on westchester ave. by some old army navy store. this was during the time the bronx river projects were being built. my dad thought they could make some money selling food from an old bus he bought. so mom worked in the luncheonette all day, while my 3 brothers were in school. my sister was too young for school. after 2 years and a big increase in rent. mom closed her shop. now here is my problem. the malted machine still works. but the wiring is fraying. does any body know where i can take this family heirloom and get the wiring replaced? please email me and let me know. i would really aprreciate it. stay safe dear friends.

I guess enough time has passed. I can't believe how "right on" all the guesses are, in fact too close to be considered guesses. The actual answer is 456 bucks per year, or 8 bucks a month. The grand prize winner is Pat Dillon Del Savio, with her answer of 35 bucks. Pat you get an ice cold eggcream, that's the good news. The bad news is that you have to make it yourself. There's a tie for second place, Marie-Elena (Ferracano) Riggio and Matt Keenan at 42 bucks. Here's another one, maybe one that's been asked before. What was the name of that diner on Unionport by U Grant Circle that delivered your hamburger to you on a miniature train?

Bobby Roth u are so right. Rocco's grandfather, Dominick, made a great egg cream. In fact he taught me how to make them. There were several tricks. One was that you need a long thin spoon and (as you stated) you had to have the seltzer bounce off of the spoons head while it filled the Coca Cola glass(real egg creams are only made in Coke glasses) I also remember him showing me how you stir to get the best looking foam head. You have to stir in a fast chopping motion not a roumd the glass stirring motion. The man treated it like a real work of art and taught me well. I still remember him standing over me and showing me how to make'm. Get me a fountain, ice cold milk and the right syrup and I'll make anyone a great egg cream still!

Love those eggcream stories, Tony/10-4 who lived above me use to give us all nicknames when we were young. Mine was simply Eggcream. Everytime I was in the candy store and other kids got candy I was having an eggcream so the name stuck.
Here is my opinion of the eggcreams.
#1 Sara on Beach and Tremont was the best so Sue I agree with you, Todd you made a tasty eggcream as well as Rocco's grandfather. Harry Gelman and his son Paul made a good eggcream also as well as Sam that took over after Harry. Jacks made a pretty good eggcream too. Now to be modest Minnies made a real tasty eggcream too and maybe because I made them as I worked there and prepared most of them. John Tell, your mom and Mrs McQuillan and Mrs Casaine and as well as your mom's sister used come out for a break every night at 9:30 for cigarettes, the paper and eggcreams, and they use to tell Minnie let Bobby make the eggcreams. Your cousin Ellen Curley and me use to have a thing for chocolate eggcreams and to this day we talk about it when I run into her. I made them real good myself. The secret was syrup made by the red heart co. which is now u-bet syrup. You not only made the milk cold and slushy, you frosted the glass and than when you prepared it you stuck the spoon before stirring so the seltzer when in with a differnt force by hitting off the spoon. Pat I am glad you are enjoying those eggcreams at home. The only place you could not get an eggcream was Jakes on St. Lawrence. The last place to get a good eggcream probably around 1990 was Carlo's (candy store on the corner of White plains rd. and McGraw Ave.) He started seving them in paper cups and this simply kills the good taste of an eggcream. Now that I am done everyone go make yourself an eggcream and enjoy.
Regards, Bobby Roth

Ref to the rents:
When we rented a three room apartment on Taylor Ave in 1960 the rent was $55.00 per month, moved in to four room in the same building eight years later and paid $85.00 per month and from about 1983 thru the year 2000 it was $151.04 per month. I am sure when my brother finally left in 2000 the landlord was glad too see him go. The rent control days were a big help.

Yeah I remember the clinking of the milk bottles being put in the little boxes outside our doors at 5 AM, often by my pal Murphy before he went to school. I don't want to gross anyone out, but I used to put about twelve inches of arm into the pickle barrel to get a really cold one for the man to wrap up on the butcher paper to eat with my pretzels and coke. Ed Bourke, how much for rent of a three bedroom apartment on Taylor in 1945, you'd probably make the most accurate guess of all, give it a shot. Do you all remember when George V. pulled the end of his finger off running thru the fence by the handball courts, or when Paulie H. lost his hand to a rabid meat grinder at Cozmo's meat market, which Shanley immortalized in Nick Cage's character in the movie Moonstruck? I'm sorry if some of these images are in poor taste, but they're indellibly fixed on my memory and I'm on a Stratton Park stream of consciousness, don't stop me now. I must admit I've "found" people that I'd lost track of for forty years and more through this website. People that I never thought I'd get the chance to talk to again. That's fantastic, and you never know who you'll bump into. That's why I have and will continue to keep an eye on this website. I'm grateful for that...Eddie

hello old & new friends,

i remember my mom telling me her rent was $42, for 1512 beach ave. she lived there from 1944-66. as far as utlities, they were separate.

as far as the best eggcreams, i have to say harry's. never had a todd frenchman special. so i will bring the seltzer, syrup and cold milk, next time we get together. can someone please tell me why the pretzel rods always tasted better with an egg cream? i can remember when we had milk, seltzer and bleach delivered to us. also there was the fuller-brush man, the guy who sharpened scissors and knives
and the insurance man. no wonder why i felt like my mom never left the house. she didn't have to. what didn't get delivered, she sent me for. have a great weekend.

Hello All. So, many things going on here, teen club, egg creams and rent. Well, I'll just take care of one for now,the 1945 rent. Coincidently, the New York rent control law started in 1945. My Mom seems to remember that folks in the apartment building on White Plains Rd. and Tremont paid $40.00 a month and she had paid $38.00 for an apartment on St. Lawrence in 1941. The average salaries at the time were, more or less, about $2,000.00 a year and in 1947 the average market rent was $44.00. And, a rule of thumb, at the time, was to put aside a weeks pay to cover the rent. So, with these things in mind, I'll take a blind guess and say that the monthly rent for Ed's folks was $42.00. But, were the utilities included. Take care all, Have a good weekend. Love, Peace and Happiness, Matt Keenan

I loved the egg creams at Rocco's too. Do you remember getting soda and selzter delivered to your home? We used the get the seltzer bottles delivered so we could make egg creams at home. The soda man would pick up the empty bottles and replace them.

I also remember the teen center. I loved going there to play bumper pool at night.

Do you remember getting that flexible wire a from the 102 Parkie House and making key chains? I could never master the one with the snake head.

Ed,
I guess $35 for the rent.
In 1965 when I lived on Archer our rent was $65 monthly. I would go down to the Ardea office on Archer to pay.
Re egg creams...I only had them at Harry's. They were delicious. Bobby Roth gave me his recipe and I've been enjoying them at home. Along with a pretzel rod!

Good Friday morning to all of you early birds.I forgot to mention, MARION this too is a good idea idle chatter day.Would also make a good ecard .O by the way I usually keep my EIGHTY YEAR old parents and brothers ClIFF,ANDY AND STEPHEN apprised of the stories and such on the site.My parents like listening. I was sort of at a disatvantage being the only girl and living on WHITE PLAINS RD.DID NOT have the oportunity to go to the park as often. You know how parents are.I love the stories of the man made pool in the park sounded like a lot of fun.MY parents fixed that problem and got us a pool.Well it was fun but I think I would of liked the park better. However when I moved into the flats my son had the privilege to go in from time to time.Us girls watched them swim around and around remember that PRETTY.Well I am sure this is considered idle and mundane but it was my experience in Stratton Park.We also would bus it up to Castle Hill pool. That is were he eventually learned how to swim. But on to the funny thing I told my Elderly parents about this other generation thing and a split site and things associated with the situation. Now my mom looks at my dad and says "O these OLD PEAPLE ALWAYS NAGGING AND COMPLAINING JUST A BUNCH OF SPOIL SPORTS"!Now remember not MY words just a repeat. But they are too much as they sit there doing the same thing how ironically funny.Well I am sure this falls into the idle chatter box category. But I feel in my heart of hearts good comes usually out of something that may not seem so at the time and with that my last comment on the subject.Have a great day bring your umbrella with ya.By now

Getting back to nostalgic trivia, you might find the answer to this trivia question interesting. I was recently going through some old paper work at my brother's house and found the original lease that my parents signed with Regents Leasing Agency right after they got married in 1945 when my father got discharged from the army after returning from Europe at the end of WWII. They had a three room flat (one bedroom) on the 3rd floor in 1576 Taylor Avenue, the same apartment that Tom and I lived in throughout grammar school. The terms of the lease were for one year's rent. Guess how much it was on either a per year or a per month basis in 1945?

John Tell good idea you have there I like it.Very inventive and could be of some help.We could sure use some as of now.Anyway I do hope things get back on track and I am sure they will and all will be forgotten.Matty thank you for your input on the subject of the thirty two people who are displeased with the action on the site and the fact the older folks are not on.I am very surprised to hear that.I hope Mr.Bourke can be of assistance and gets back to you.You made many valid points however I think your depiction of the trivia you have to do with is inacurate. It adds so much fun and makes us remember things we may have forgot or maybe did not even know.I think the people like it alot. I thank you for speaking for the STRATTON PARK SITE.You have contributed much even your picture slides of the neighborhood.I was a bit abrehensive at first thinking about this post and just wondering if it is a valid post to write. You are right no one should be scared away for any reason. There should be nothing to fear at all. I can understand the scare of some people I was myself but got over it.I say alot of stuff and have fun with it.Ed Acunzo said it there was good and bad but we much rather focus on the good we are adults now so why not bend alittle.I looked at the rules and regulations I see no problem anywhere.Well it seems all are sorry, scared and God only knows but I hope this gets right again and we can enjoy the stories.I was reading the boards introduction and contents as I have done before to refresh my memory.I came across some interesting things I had missed the first time.I love the idea Indians roamed the area at one time. However was taken over and the other events leading up to the O'Leary flats.I even recognized Ardea Reality as being on my rent reciept. They went under in the late seventies and Stratton park was finished. They also mentioned TAR BEACH I completely forgot about that expression.I was always up there with a few friends looking over the roof.We had our sun tan lotion, drinks, beach chairs, picnic baskit the works. We never had to worry. There were even cloths lines. Freddy,s mom Louise a good friend of mine was alway up on tar beach. We had a lot of fun She was always hanging her wash so perfect miss her alot but making me smile..There is alot of bad going on all over the world and right here in the good old USA.Remember all those good songs we had back then? There were so many but one that just keeps running through my mind is "CHERISH" LOL Linda HALL

Ed Bourke: It's good to see you posting up your comments and I hope that you not only continue but can recruit more people to get on board. I do have a concern about your concern relating to "idle chatter". Could you be a little more specific? I, now, even question my own regular postings as, maybe, being unacceptable and falling into that category. Should I refrain from comming up with my peculiar trivia questions about our neighborhood? Should people not thank Joe Mac for his picture taking at the picnic and mud bowl? Should we not offer congrats, kudos, sympathy or condolences? Should we not say that we are going away to visit an old friend from the neighborhood? Ed, I'm really trying here, can you give some concrete specific examples from some past postings of what you feel is "idle" and what is "not idle". Making an assertion that there is "idle chatter" with others who support that determination without being specific puts everyone into the pot to question the acceptability of their postings and just may discourage our good friends. I'm just asking to put the cards on the table and give us a clearer picture of what is "idle" and what is not. And, who is the arbiter of what is or isn't "idle chatter"? Maybe, this posting itself is "idle chatter". Is it a self imposed discipline for one to determine whether their posting is relevant or significant before they click the submit button for a message before it is posted? While some postings may seem irrelevent to the site, I personally would not like to deter anyone from contributing on the site because they may feel intimidated that the content of what they post may be questioned. The more people on the site the better and merrier. However, I would oppose personal attacks or obnoxious offensive postings and I did find some recent postings by Joe B, ie: "pity party", his words not mine, to be a little too much. Also, as mentioned by others, I could care less if someone mispelled words or didn't use proper grammar. It's the contribution that is important and I wouldn't want someone to not post something because they may feel that what they write would be criticized for the manner of the expression. Dose it reelly mkae a differecne if someoen posts somethign and mispelels a fwe or evn a lto of words? If you can read that last sentence, then it really doesn't matter, does it. I certainly would rather folks to put up their postings than not. Regardless, of whatever is posted by whomever posts it there is certainly no generation discrimination and everyone and anyone one can participate on this site which, as recently posted by the webmaster, serves multi-purposes which are go beyond and are more than just historical. I know of people on this site who have been laid up for months and the communication on this site has helped them cope with their predicament and others who have lost loved ones have found some comfort by exchanging postings with long lost friends. Others may make a vague reference to someone or something and create a sequela to some very interesting postings. That, in and of itself, says a lot for the value of this site and letting people post messages without wondering if they are being read with a Sister Dolores Eye. When people initially come on the site you can sense their mood of excitement and they may put up some postings and then drift away to maybe read more and write less while others, like myself, become sort of regulars and maybe even over do it. But the intentions are good to keep the site alive and not dormant. It seems, that we should all feel safe when comunicating on the site and not have to worry that someone out there is questioning the veracity or grammatical accuracy of what is written. Please take my comments as not critical of any one but more as an observation with good intentions. I hope everyone has a good weekend and look forward to hearing from as many people from the neighborhood as possible. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

I'm sitting around tonite watching TV about under priveleged children needing to go to an after school center. It reminded me about how lucky we were to have an after school program at 102 when we were kids. I remember playing basketball on Saturday mornings in the gym, watching Knicks and Celtics playoff game at the center on a Friday night, and during the week shooting pool, playing ping pong, chess, checkers etc. On Wednesday nights St Anthonys had teen night, playing BBall, setting up the lunch tables as boards for hockey and the checking was vicious! More importantly, hangin' with the girls in the cafeteria where there was an awesome juke box. I believe teachers probably volunteered their time back in the day. Now, at least where I live in Jersey, there's too much red tape and the schools do not want the liablity of offering such a wonderful environment for todays kids. It may not have been Mayberry (who would want that?) but our neighboorhood and those times were simply the best.

It saddens me to see all of this hostility right below the surface of this seemingly Mayberry-like nastalgic website concerning our old neighborhood, but these exchanges are small examples of what always lay right below the surface back in the past as well, aren't they? I feel like Stratton Park is every bit my neighborhood as much as any Archer Ram or Cotter's bar mainstay, and therefore I have a right to this website as much as anyone else. I don't need to be told that, it's my birthright, and people made me feel warm and comforted when I lost my brother Tom last month, which I very much appreciated. But I know from offline e-mail messages that I've gotten in the past from people that I don't even remember from the old neighborhood who are watching this website but not commenting themselves, that they feel like outsiders, and that many of the people who reminisce on this site appear to see Stratton Park through rose colored glasses. They feel uncomfortable now as they did then because they weren't in the "in crowd." It most definitely was not Mayberry in any respect. You may say "That's their problem, we come here to feel good and relive good stuff from the old days." That is your right. But the old days weren't always good, particularly in our neighborhood, particularly between some factions of our neighborhood. Don't get me wrong, I cherish all of my memories, I hold them near and dear to my heart and that neighborhood will always be mine and I have no need to dwell on negative memories, many of which perhaps I'm responsible for myself. But in my opinion you shouldn't try to censor anyone who cares to speak about any part of it. All comments should be welcome, anyone who lived among us has a right to say anything they want, and if their contribution adds no value to the exchange, ignore them, don't respond, just like many may choose to disagree with this posting via silence, which is their right. Case in point, the clown posing as Roy Metzger, the easiest way to stop that is to ignore him obviously. Presto, chango, no more fun, he doesn't get a rise out of anybody and goes away to amuse himself elsewhere. Okay, I,m done, I'll get off my soapbox, sorry if I've offended anyone, not my intention.

She told him wait till he has children, well all the craziness & fun he did he has gotten back in his 5 boys.
Robert, I don't remember the parkie's name but I do remember that we all drove him crazy and took over the park. Those were the days.

Man, I go away for a few weeks and all hell seems to have broken loose. What's going on? COO-COO!!
On a lighter note, the sprinklers at 102 were the best! Linda, your brother Kevin Leddy used to have a key to the park house & on hot summer nights he would turn on the sprinklers & we would go in at 3 in the morning. How cool is that?

i said i wasn't going on the web anymore, but when i went to church today, i heard a passage that was said at mass and it generated this response--

if you want to bring your gifts to the altar, first make peace with your neighbors--
scars come from wounds and wounds come from stories
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

the stories and scars will always be there but the wounds need to heal--i need to apologize for my use of the web--i showed my eweb statement to a few people and they didn't think it deserved such a violent response from many of you--i added insult to injury by fighting back at you with more venomous statements--i will still stay off the web as i said but i needed to do what the Lord said i must do--

some may forgive me and some may not, but i made an attempt to heal wounds-

peace to all

hello old & new friends,
so nice to see memories of 102 park. i can verify about lisa sneaking off to the sprinklers at 102 park.cause i was with her. julie we dragged you with us a few times too. we use to clog the drain so we could swim around in circles. i also remember getting thrown in to the fire hydrant a few times, when we were older.(linda s. can recall this. my brothers patrick & vince (a.k.a. Junior) will be visiting me the next few weeks. also my sister dina. so i hope to get some stratton park history & maybe a few cute stories to share with all of you.we ferracano 5, lived in stratton park from the 1940's and i was the last to leave in 1982. so we have a lot of fond memories. exactly 1 year ago, i was introduced to this site by monica white. at the time we ferracano's were going thru a hard time. then mom passed exactly a month later. if it had not been for my family, friends & this wonderful web site. i would have not beeen able together thru the saddest time of my life. also i have gotten to know some really wonderful people. some through this site. some at the mudbowl. a few of you know my older siblings. also this site has brought back lots of memories and put a smile on my face, when i needed it most.so that is why i write my mini-novels. just to share. i work in a new york city junior high school. i see things that would turn most people's stomachs. things i want to shut out, when i get home. so please everybody please keep the stories flowing. no one puts a gun to our heads to read this site. i will try & get my brother junior (vince) on next week. so if you remember him from sal's butcher shop or living at 1512 beach. please feel free to contact him at my email address to say hello. i have a stack of wonderful stories i printed from this site. some from people i don't know. but my mom affected them some how. just like all of us affecting each other. life is too sweet & short to be bitter. so let the stories flow. have a great day.

First of all, I have enjoyed reading all of the different postings. I've seen notes from people who I haven't seen in so many years. A couple of today's messages were pretty scary, hopefully they won't continue. I have one important observation that I would like to pass on. My sister, Honey, said Sr. Gabriel's ruler would be going crazy hitting everyone for the spelling and grammar used in the messages!! I'm sure a lot of us remember her. Take the site for what it is, a trip back in time, and a chance to catch up with different people. It seems like most people have a lot better memory than I do. Take care.

i remember waiting for all the little kids to get away from the sprinklers so we "swim" and pretend we were in a pool. i don't remember my mother ever having any concerns about the water or anyhing else for that matter probably because she never knew where we were. this was okay so long as you went home when she called out the window. it's amazing we all survived considering nothing was child proof, we played in dirty lots with old wood to make clubhouses, we splashed in hydrant water in the street. yes, those were the days.

Loved the sprinklers in 102 park - also the big one in Parkchester near the garage on Archer Street. We were able to sneak in because we had relatives living in Parkchester. Did any of your mothers ever have health concerns about the sprinklers? My mother would never let us go to the sprinklers near vacation time, fearing my brother and I would become ill and vacation would have to be cancelled. Maybe this was because of the polio scare of years before but that was over by then. Maybe the water was dirty but we all survived!

I loved the summers back then. I remember when it was really hot someone would open a fire hydrant, this was before they locked them. When we were little we would go to the sprinklers in 102 park and put towels over the drain and "swim". times were so simple then.

Hello to All: Hope all is well. It seems like an appropriate time to create a diversion and take a break to get the site back on track. I often find it helpful to go back and read all the wonderful stories people have shared on the site and with the warm weather visiting us I am reminded of the days of getting back into the streets and playground to play all of our creative games and antics. However, I have very fond memories of the Escapes beyond our neighborhood, like flying kites at Ferry Point Park and skipping rocks in the water at the end of Closson Point. They say,in the twenties, there used to be an amusement park there with a ferry boat before the bridges were built. We had many family picnics at Ferry Point and the picnic grounds of Orchard Beach and could go fishing for fish, not spauldeens, at the pier at City Island. For a few years we would really take a trip and go to my grandparents bungalow in Rockaway and enjoy the warm summer nights at the Playland. It seemed that vacations were not far from home and very often were for just only a few hours a day but not far away from ther neighborhood. Traffic then as is now was horrendous with a bottleneck at the Whitestone Drive-In before the Bruckner and Cross Bx were built and the Hutch and Bx River seemed to be the only highways. When we got a little older and stretching our independence a bit we would take the 40 bus with our transistor radios and go down to Golden's or Nichol's Beach in Throgs Neck and listen to the Beach Boys, Ventures, Beatles, Four Seasons, Supremes, Four Tops, etc. But, I do remember how nice it was to return home, hot, sticky and sandy, take a shower, and go out to hang out with friends for some stickball, ring-o-leavee-o or Johnny Ride the Pony, curb ball, box ball, hit the stick, jax, etc., And then sit with the older folks on their beach chairs at night to get out of the hot apartments without airconditioning. It was nice to get away but always nice to be back in the neighborhood. What was your escape, maybe it was the fire escape. Hope everyone has a good spring and summer and look forward to the Picnic on July 7th. Don't forget to bring your hula hoops and yo-yo's. Have a Good Week. Love, Peace and Happiness, Matt

I think most of us believed that the purpose of this website was to share memories of a place we all knew; to re-connect with old friends and perhaps to make some new ones. I hope most will agree that the diatribe by ooops was completely unnecessary and out of line; and, if he/she had real conviction behind their comments they would have used their real name. If people on this site want to share some laughs, send some good wishes or ask for support it is because they feel a connection with the others on the site. We are all free to read, respond or ignore any or all of the postings.

Hi all hope all of you are enjoying this wonderful weather that we are having and had over the week-end. After the weekend and saw the responses, I am not understanding why all this negative replys from a couple of older people. Just want to let the older people know if it wasn't for them who knows where we younger ones would be. I feel to come to their age and hopefully in good health and in a good frame of mind that they would have a better attitude about life. I often heard it is hard to teach a old dog new tricks, but where we all came from and be able to get together on this web-site it fantastic. Isn't this web-site about MEMORIES AND FACTS OF 102 PARK. It has lots and lots of memories-good and bad. Thinking back they were my fondest child hood memories. So if we all are able to talk and remember about those days, to all the older folks LIGHTEN-UP guys and have FUN!!!.

there has been talk re 2 sites-=-i really can't comment one way or another about that , but the reason i don't go on the site anymore is i really didn't hang out with 99% of the people on the site, and if i mention something like hanging out in the alleyways behind the buildings etc, no one seems to respond because they don't know me--but, if someone is in the "in crowd", and i don't mean that sarcastically but i used that for a better choice of words, they comments flow from all directions--yes, yes, i few people have commented occasionally, when i mentioned something but maybe once or twice out of maybe 20-25 times when i entered comments---

this is not sour grapes but maybe human nature--you all sound like a great bunch of people with kind hearts and i hope this e mail doesn't offend, but my absence from the site is because it gets somewhat discouraging when i e mail and no one comments--

i want to than ed bourke for comments on the proper way to use the site--thanks again ed--now, see--i really didn't hang out with ed, and he maybe doesn't remember me, but he was kind enough to mention my name on a comment i made--

matt keenan was going to get back to me on a comment but i don't blame him at all-he probably gets the most messages--matt, you are and were a very popular guy--nice going!!!!

i hope everyone sees why some people are afraid to comment on the site--even though they lived in the area, they didn't really hang out with the crowd in question on the site--it appears the site is made up of people who know each other very well--this is fine, but sometimes, make a guy or gal feel good by recognizing them because, Lord knows what may be going on in their life now, that they just need a friend to say hello--

i hope you all understand what i mean, and i really hope i didn't offend anyone, because that was not my intention

God bless each and everyone of you

A few of us just got back from The Villages in Fla. where we saw Peter and Mary Bourke. Peter has a couple of great old pictures that he will post shortly on this Board. He will also post an old program from when the Archer Rams played the Eagles. It listed all the players and really brought back memories. Those Eagles games tended to be very emotional.

Diane Clark had asked a question on the Board a week or more ago regarding the name of the girl who had "flown" off the big swings at 102 park many years ago...Peter remembered it to be Roseanne Galante.

Just got a chance to view the Mud Bowl '07 slide show. Thank you Joe Mac. Between the pictures and the music, you do such a great job of capturing the spirit of the day. Looking at all those smiling faces, it's a wonderful tribute to the event and may also serve to pursuade others who have been hesitant, to stop by next year. Great job, Joe!

Ed Bourke, thanks for joining in and sharing your memories of our neighborhood football before the Rams were formed. I think back at how the efforts of Ed Stack probably kept so many of the neighborhood boys busy and maybe out of trouble and how that team has continued to play a major role in helping to define the neighborhood and bringing us together. Cheers to Ed Stack and to all.

Cathy

Not to add fuel to the fire but I like the questions posted on the site. To be honest those questions do relate to the history and fabric of a world that was OUR neighborhood. So while some people see them as idol chatter, the fact of the matter is that they are very relevant and have a deep historical value that definitely pertains to the intergrity of the historical aspect of this site.

Now to add fuel to the fire, here's a new question:
Who made the best egg creams around? My answer would be... me(sorry to be self serving) at Rocco's candy store(Frankie Rocco if you read this how about some back-up here?). I used to make them for everyone that hung out there. I'm sure many, many of you have completely different opinions on this. So feel free to chime in.

One note about spam. As you said Linda, most people understand the spam issue - and even I have been unable to post due to spam. If one does encounter spam, take the time to replace a few words and eventually you'll find the problem word or phrase. That can be irritating if you've written several pages but it's the only solution at the moment. However, the webmaster is looking at other formats in order to combat this issue.

SOFTBALL EVERY SUNDAY MORNING FOR DOLLARS AND IF YOU WERE OLD ENOUGH (16+) YOU MADE IT TO THE KLIEN'S BEAR GARDEN
ACROSS FROM MULHOLLANDS ON BEACH, THERE WAS ALWAYS A CRAP GAME. MANY TIMES I SAT ON THE MAIL BOX IN THE FRONT OF THE LOTS AND LOOKED DOWN ARCHER ST FOR THE COPS. WHEN THE WEATHER GOT COLD SUNDAY MORNING WAS FOOTBALL TIME.
WE USE TO LINE UP A MAKE SHIFT FIELD WITH FLOWER AND PLAYED
FOOTBALL AGAINST THE LOCAL TEAMS. OUR NEIGHBORHOOD HAD TWO TEAMS ONE WAS SOMEWHAT ORGANIZED "THE Packers" FROM LELAND AND ARCHER AND THEN ARCHER BOYS HAD A TEAM THAT BASICALLY HAD ABOUT 15 GUYS THAT PLAYED THE GAME NEVER
DID NTHEY HAVE ENOUGH AND ALWAYS PICKED GUYS TO PLAY JUST AFTER CHURCH WAS OVER, EVERY ONE HAD DIFFERENT JERSEYS.\
THE STEERS WERE ALWAYS WILLING TO PLAY AGAME AT NOBLE FIELD.

tHEN EDDY STACK CAME ALONG AND WE GOT GREAT FOOTBALL TEAM THE RAMS IN THE GREEN JERSEYS.

OUR MUD BALL CONSISTED OF THE OLDER GUYS AGAINST THE RAMS
AND SO THE MUD BOWL WAS CREATED.

IN THE EARLY DAYS WE HAD SCOOTERSMADE FROM OLD 2x4 AND FRUIT BOXES AND RUSTY OLD UNION SKATES AND WHAT EVER NAILS U COULD FIND IN THE LOTS.....WE EVEN GOT MORE CREATIVE

To Matt Keenan and Marie Eleana:
I applaud you on your last post in explaining how the site works and how people get together and how great this site really is. I have spoken to people I have lost touch with and have not seen in 30 years. The longest friends I have of knowing over 40 years are Marie Eleana and Tommy Homenuk and it was this site that got us chatting again and will probably bring us all together in a massive reunion. As for you Mr. Bourke this site should not be split to cater to anyone in the manner that you stated period. I hope that you can connect with people from the past and the best way is to join in and you will see that this site is serving it's purpose running the way it is.

Welcome Ed Bourke and JoAnne Ahern Schlesinger. As you may have read the postings I am no stranger to the site and do my best to be relevent and creative with a sense of humor. It's always nice to see new contributors on the site especially those who grew up in the neighborhood before the Cross Bx Expressway was built. The neighborhood had a different complection when there was no playground, no co-ops, there was a noble lot, there was White Plains Road with cobble stones and they used to have dances on the roof of St. Anthony's. Those stories can only come from the folks who were the original Stratton Parkers and I would only hope that there were more contributors and if more readers wrote we would have quite an extrordinary site, even more than it is now. After all, these experiences are our roots which stretch far and wide and a slight reference to some mundane subject could inspire someone else to write or strike a cord and lead us to some other interesting topic. Ed Bourke, I half heartedly agree with you about the site not being a chat room despite the fact that I was the one who asked if anyone knew the name of Sylvani's dog. In all seriousness some of us banter back in forth for fun and may take a lighthearted approach. Anyway, I sense that you may have a misunderstanding about how the site works and how messages get posted. For some unexplainable reason certain words are not accepted on the site and a posting may get automatically rejected, also known as Spam. Many of us have experienced this rejection and had to re-write postings until the sSammed word was eliminated. This is very frustrating and requires patience. I know the webmaster is aware of the problem but apparently at this time nothing can be done to rectify this spam problem. Spam words do not discriminate by age but only by certain words which if I wrote them here this posting would get spammed or rejected. There is nothing that stops anyone from posting a message on the site and if a certain faction of Stratton Parkers are not on the site it is only because they do not know of its existence or they just don't write. There is room for anyone and everyone to put up a message. Ed, your posting prodded me to look over the last 200 e-mails and I found it interesting that those 200 postings were made in the last 60 days and were the result of approximately 60 different people. I can remember that just about a year ago there may have been less than 30 postings a month and cedrtainly by a lot fewer than 60 people. This demonstrates that over time more and more people find out about the site and we get more and more people making connections with old chums who wind up having their own mini-reunions and even come to our two yearly gatherings, the mud bowl and picnic. There are,of course some of us, and I am one of them, who write on the site fairly often and there are others who occassionally chip in and there are always newcommers. I read all the postings and while some seem to be chatting among themselves I believe they also e-mail each other personally. I do not know everyone but have gotten to know new folks whom I never new who lived in the neighborhood or went to school with. As far as I am concerned they are all a part of the history of Stratton Park and while almost all of us are no longer there the history lives on to our present situation whether good or bad. I'd much prefer more contributors to the site than to limit contribution because you never know what is said by whom it is stated that they may trigger some glorious event buried in our memory banks which often brings a smile or even a tear. So, with all that said, it would be nice to read some of the history you know and I am sure as irrelevant or important it may seem it just might inspire another person to get on and create another connection with some old chum they haven't heard from in 30, 40 or even 50 years. My Mom is now 86 years old and I often tell her of things and people I see on the site and she often tells me stories that inspire me to write something of interest. So, Ed, be patient and try to take some of the postings with a sense of humor and know that we are a neighborhood of great folks and this site has been instrumental in bringing many people great joy and happiness and sometimes poignant sadness in our historical journey that continues beyond the time boundaries of White Plaims Road and the Bronx River Parkway. I Look forward to more newcommers on the site and whatever it is they have to share. As a final note, I am glad to know that our wonderful Sylvani bike man had a dog and the dog's name was King. Be well, have a wonderful weekend. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

I for one am one of the old folks who does go on to the site and read the messages but never really write anything because I never see any of my old friends on. But. today I saw that Bobby Hammer was ill with cancer. Remember me BUBBIE - I sat next to you in class - 7th & 8th grade. I believe Michael Flannagan sat on the other side of me. We must have always been in trouble because we sat in the front row. We were in the small classroom downstairs. I have beautiful memories of St. Anthony's and I plan on being at the 100th year reunion. My brother Les is on the committee. Hope to see you there and many of our classmates.
In the meantime - my prayers are with you. My memory fails me - who were the nuns in 7th & 8th?

dear mr. bourke,
1st let me tell you how sorry i am that you feel "OUR" site should be split. i, too sometimes have trouble getting my msg on the site. no 1 is scanning us by age. we all make mistakes. its not always so easy typing those "crooked" shaped words on time. some have been "spamed" not knowing what word is considered improper on the site. i came to this site exactly 1 year ago. since that time, i have seen messages from 1 of the Harrington sisters, Marie (McCrink) Fabiano my own brother (Patrick Ferracano, almost 65) as well as Joe B. i don't need to name all the 60+'s, they know who they are. i have met people thru this site who married & moved out of the area, before i was born in '59. maybe some of you older s.p. "kids" are just shy to come & share old stories. i have met some wonderful people on this site, who are 5-15 years older than myself. but not to be politcally incorrect. most of the older (60+'s) have a hard time with computers.or still don't know about this site. so why not get out your adress book, and call a few old friends and inform them of the site. i met a few older s/p kids, at this years mudbowl & they confessed to have no time to type.my brother Vince Ferracano is 63 and totally computer illiterate. we recently read about Bob Hammer who is ill. i saw his photos & have met him due to this site. he shared some nice memories. sorry for this "novel" but i feel that if some "40 & 50" somethings want to remember a dog's name from 35 yrs ago, is upsetting a few people, roll to the next message or share. i would love to hear from people who knew what 102 park use to look like and what street games you played. besides where were you when the webmaster gave a presentation at the bronx historical society? he requested that we bring old photos and hsitorical stuff from the area.
so now that you are a site member start sharing.just try typing those stupid crooked words faster. to all the other readers on this site. (especially those who know me) i mean no harm or insult. but i know that this site has brought a lot of us together. lets share old stories and memories and not sling mud at each other. isn't there enough hatred in the world. stay safe old & new friends

I am writing to ask your prayers for Bob Hammer (St. Anthony's class '52) and also ask that you drop a message of encouragement to him. Bob has been fighting cancer for almost 3 years and now has a new site of great concern. He has great belief and welcomes prayers.
Bob is married, has a large family, lives in Texas and hasn't seen anyone from the old neighborhood since shortly after high school. Thanks to this website he has connected with old neighborhood friends and rekindled friendships via email. If you remember Bob do post a note. He checks in periodically and would be happy to hear from the old crowd.

be surprized who you will hear from. after you have posted a message. sometimes an old story from a 'strattonpark kid"
brings a smile to another, who can really use a good chuckle. stay safe and happy...

What happened to Roy Metzger? Two things I remember; he "dated" my friend Rosie when she was about 13 and he was much older. The other thing...I was in his sister Lucy's class from 5 to 8 grade at St. Anthony's.
So many people seem to have known him, I was just wondering what I didn't see when I was a young girl.
I can remember an older boy, denim jacket, a little on the short side, and thick short hair. Even at that time I remember him being a little too old to go out with someone so young. Of course, I said nothing.
I am guessing he would be in his mid to late 40's. That's still pretty young. I am very sorry he is not around anymore.
My sympathy goes out to his family.

John Tell: Yea, Cornell's must have packed all our closets with our Sunday best. John, I had a similar problem when on the first day wearing a pair of new Cornell's slacks I fell on my knee and landed on one of those wax drink tubes melting ever so softly on the sidewalk of Archer Street. I was petrified to try to explain how this apparent blob of wax was so prominently exhibited. Meeska Mooska Mousekateer, Well I have no Idea who may be under those Mickey and Minnie costumes. It's a great picture and question, if no one else knows maybe you can share a hint or two. It seems that mice have been a recent topic of discussion lately. Here's a twist from the Pioneer story of the mouse. My Mom once shaped the form of a mouse from a wet tea bag and colored the string with black shoe polish and then placed into a trap hidden behind a curtain. My Dad proudly did his manly duty and took the imposter and flushed him away while proclaiming that we had caught the little critter. Hope everyone had a nice Easter and will have a great Spring, whenever it decides to arrive. Love, Peace and Happiness. Matt Keenan

HAPPY EASTER to all!!!

One of my most memorable Easter Sundays happened when I was about 10 years old and tore a hole in the back of my newly purchased "Cornells of ParkChester" sports jacket...

I was sure I was dead when I got home...talk about stress...sheeesh....<:~(

PS... hey Matty Keenan here's a trivia question for you, give us the identity of Mickey and Minnie Mouse now pictured on the home page here...<:~)

I've learned of this place called O'leary flats. A place where we once called our home. There was 102 park where I would skate untill dark. We roamed & ran wild, some expeditions of mine. The grey guy's did come to the fence we'd run. Billy Holtz I can see, wishing a watermelon of me. Was a land as it went kids called themselves gents. Theres Mike calling John, hot beans & butter anyone? Kevin Russell has the puck. Leading our team through the muck. It's wonderful to see what a neighborhood could be. This place I have known called the Stratton Park zone.
It's dear in my heart till the day that I drop. It's true I still care St. Anthony's there. Now I must go into the future I roam. What a pleasant suprise these Stratton Park times! James(mugsy)McGaughey 65-75

Hi Everyone. Hey Marie Elena.. who can forget the Easter fashion contests at the "Oval". It was the highlight of the day to see everyone from boys and girls to families dress for the big event and get judged in each category. I remember very clearly one family all dressed in powder blue. It was a couple with a little boy and girl. They all matched. I actually have a picture of Noreen (Fitzgerald) Clark wearing a bright yellow coat and a white hat as she held onto her winning trophy. I should look for that and post it. Anyway, those were the good old days. Sometimes I get real sad around this time, ever since 1997 when my Dad died Easter week, after a terrible battle with emphysema. He was buried the day after Easter and we had the worst weather ever. The day started with some sun, then rain & hail and ended with one of the biggest snow storms ever. But then I smile, and think that the Lord took him during the one of the most sacred times of the year. And as the Indians would say "The Four Winds came (and trust me they did) to take a great warrior to the Great Spirit in the sky"!! HAPPY EASTER IN HEAVEN DAD, AND TO ALL OUR FRIENDS THAT HAVE PASSED. And to all you Stratton Park-ites - HAVE A VERY HAPPY EASTER. Sue

i don't think i had the priviledge of knowing roy , but i'm saddened that a demented mind, especially during holy week, would charade as this person, whom everyone loves from what i read on the web--

this is the doing of a sick mind--it's very sad that a person finds kicks in hurting people, who especially, during a holiday season, when loved ones are missed the most, would do this terrible stunt-

although mary and i didn't have the pleasure of knowing roy, we know he is in heaven and we wish his family all the blessings that God can offer at such a difficult time--my wife lost her mom last july and feels the grief to the max, so we sympathize with friends and family

sincerely

Happy Easter!! To MarieElena, I also remember the "fashion contest" around the fountain in parkchester. My sister and I loved that, we never won but it was fun to feel so important prancing around that fountain, hoping we wouldn't fall in. I remember the great Easter outfits your mom made for you and Dina. You ladies were always very fashionable. I also remember everyone always seemed to pose in front the statues in front of my building (1574 Beach Ave) in their Easter outfits for pictures, why I don't know. I hope everyone has a blessed Holiday!!!
love
lisa

PS- To that person who posted the Roy Metzger message, you should be ashamed of yourself- that was a horrible thing to do.

hello old & new friends,
since easter is a few days away. thought i would mention something pleasant from our old neighborhood. i was just telling my neighbor about how there was Easter fashion contest in parkchester every year. is there anyone else out there remembering walking around the fountain, modeling their easter outfit? there were catagories for different age groups. i recall the kelly twins competing too. my mom alwas made my spring coat to match my dress. one year the button fell off my new pocketbook. well i couldn't go home with a damaged new pocketbook. so i stooped down to pick it up. this almost caused the others behind me to crash into me. a few almost fell into the water. you can guess, there was some laughter.but i was one of the first to be removed from that group. i didn't have the heart to tell my mom. who was making a big dinner.being the seamstress, that she was. she always took pride in the easter outfits, that she made for my sister dina & myself. it was tough enough competeing against all the "store bought" outfits, mostly from cornelles! mostly i remeber how my aunt marge's lilac bush, at our house on beach, always smelled so sweetly at eastertime.someone please tell what was with all the sailor suits? every little boy has had to wear one, at least once in his childhood. i had my oldest wear one, his firts easter too? to all my strattonpark friends, i wish you peace, happiness and fond memories this Easter season.

Could you tell me what school you went to and who was your first grade teacher and when you stood in line-up in school who stood in front of you and who stood behind you. If you are the real Roy than answer my question. Also who use to hide you when your parents were looking for you? The answer is not me. Bobby

Hey there Roy, You got my attention with your Dog being 31 years old. Is the Dog's name Bealzebub? Is this dog a non-smoking and alcohol free vegetarian? I really remember your dog, wow what an amazing life. I'm sure you are aware of the dog food recall which has now been shown to be in dry food, and also just showed up in ALPO. Anyway, I looked up on-line and the oldest dog recorded was a australian cattle dog named Bluey and was 29 years old. The Guiness book of records has the longest living dog in 2002 as a beagle named Butch who was 27 years old at that time. So, it looks like we have a candidate for the Stratton Park - Local Boy makes Big. Roy your dog may just be the new entry for oldest dog for Guiness Book of Records. You should really give it a try. Glad to know you are okay. Linda

Hi everyone,

It's Roy. Roy Metzger. I know a lot of you people think I've gone on to the eternal resting place. That was just a rumor. I'm still walking the streets, reminding myself how great things used to be. No more people to fight. JUst sitting here, on the corner.

How's everyone doing? Sorry I couldn't make the mud bowl this year. I owe too much money to too many people, and they may actually ask me to pay them back. I still have my Doberman Pinscher. He's 31 years old now; that's 227 years old in human years.

Well guys, gotta run. Bealzebub is calling. Looking to re-connect with Pam...

Hi All: Hope you all have a very Happy Easter ! Can't believe it is here already. I hope it doesn't rain because if the weather is nice I hide the grandkids Easter baskets and toys out in the yard and get to take pictures of them finding their stuff. Always lots of cute shots. If I have to hide things indoors there is utter chaos LOL
I send to everyone Easter Blessing and Enjoy your weekend all. Best Always Patsy

Established in 2003, This page is a monument to a little spot in the Bronx called Stratton Park. Once the name of a thriving community, it describes a part of the Bronx situated between White Plains Road to the Bronx River Parkway, East Tremont Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway. The neighborhood was named for a real estate developer, John Stratton O'Leary, who starting in 1926 built blocks of apartment buildings that would become the heart of Stratton Park. His buildings were also known un-officially as the O'Leary Flats. The Purpose of this web site is to remember Stratton Park and to pay tribute to John O'Leary and the many others that made it a great place to live, work and play.
